Driving report Moto Guzzi 1200 Sport

Long live the sport

Since Moto Guzzi has been under the wing of Aprilia and thus ultimately Piaggio, the traditionalists from Mandello del Lario have taken off. Their latest coup: the 1200 Sport.

After the all-rounder Breva, the stylish naked bike Griso and the touring ship Norge, Guzzi tirelessly follows up and now sends the 1200 sports at the start. In the literal sense of the word, because in the eyes of the press lyricists, the 1200 is a sport motorcycle to be taken seriously, and consequently the first meeting takes place on a small racetrack near Bergamo. Now, for example, Fireblade or R6 prospects have to rethink their purchase intentions?
Probably not, because a Guzzi is first and foremost a Guzzi, that is, a bunch of longitudinally installed, air-cooled V2 engine that was not intimidated by rigid noise regulations, G-Kat or Euro 3 standards. And to this day it can be identified blindly. Especially the spurting in push mode is a feast for the ears and easily makes up for the annoying cloning of the six-speed transmission, which can be operated easily and precisely, albeit with long distances. Evenly and with power, the V-two-cylinder thuds through the rev range, the explosiveness of a four-cylinder is it
naturally foreign. A displacement increase of 100 cubic centimeters compared to the Breva provides eight additional horsepower on paper, 95 should now be.
The surrounding sport is a cross between Breva, which donated the chassis and design, and Norge, which donated the
Engine delivered. Everything with the charm of the rustic mechanical engineering typical of Guzzi, so nothing for friends of the filigree. Especially with forced operation on the circuit, the machinist is more required than the helmsman in the driver, the many longitudinal waves, including their inertia and reverse torques, require carefully considered use of the shift lever if the direction of travel is not to deviate from the desired course. Chassis and brakes allow quite brisk laps.
The ground clearance is decent, the side stand comes on late to the left. The two 320 wave brake discs are pressurized via steel flex lines. Two fingers are enough to lift the rear wheel off if you wish. The non-adjustable fork reaches its limits in such exercises, while the rear shock strut hard but heartily fights the battle with the cardan moments. None of this is really quick, but it is a lot of fun.
The real purpose of sport lies in running country roads. The seat position alone is very stretched and uncomfortable in the long run due to the tubular handlebar, which is far forward due to the drive. The tiny cladding struggles for wind protection, the rest fits. The cockpit is informative, the speedometer has the rough 30s scale typical of Italians. Brake and clutch levers are adjustable, same as the brake pedal and gear lever. Workmanship and materials give a good impression. If you are curious about sportiness à la Mandello del Lario: From the end of October, the Guzzi will be available from dealers in red or black.
