Resharpened retro bike

The real meaning of the English verb to tune means something like adjust, tune, adjust. No increase in performance was originally planned. But it doesn’t bother either, as this particularly finely tuned Raisch-Triumph Thruxton 1200 R proves.

D.he men from Classicbike Raisch () from Rheda-Wiedenbruck in North Rhine-Westphalia are no strangers to the retro and custom scene. So far, the focus of their work has been on air-cooled Triumph Twins of the modern age, but they have also worked on a BMW R nineT. The latest coup is a current Triumph Thruxton 1200 R. The well-proportioned retro classic already looks absolutely gorgeous in its original condition, and with the standard power of 97 hp and 112 Nm, there is hardly any feeling of lack of power even on brisk country roads. On the one hand. On the other hand, this output of 1,200 cm³ does not exactly speak for a fully exhausted engine, and optically one or the other attachment is obviously due to the sensitivities of large-scale production. Something’s going to happen here and there, they said to themselves in Rheda-Wiedenbruck and got to work. Lo and behold, something was still possible. Here and there.

When pimped, the Thruxton R looks much more wiry

The way the bike shown here stands, it would go for 22,000 euros from the farm, with the visual changes making up the lion’s share. Here the most important things in a nutshell: deeper handlebar stubs including Rizoma grips 687 euros, rear conversion including taillights 417 euros, modified seat 380 euros, Wilbers struts rear 1,399 euros, black coating of fork tubes, rims, hubs, triple clamps and swingarm 1,060 euros as well as the front Fenders for 190 euros and the small but rather unusable rearview mirror for 129 euros. And since the parts do not come to the motorcycle by themselves, around 1,000 euros are still due for assembly. When pimped in this way, the Triumph Thruxton 1200 R looks much more wiry and degrades the original into a chubby.

Cost: approx. 22,000 euros. The series Thruxton is available from 12,800 euros.

But as so often in life, you don’t see the best. But you can clearly feel it here. The front brake was given a boost with coated brake pistons (320 euros) and Lucas SRQ pads. Result: more transparent and much more snappy than the original. And listen. Because this Thruxton is currently the largest expansion stage of the in-house power kit, called Stage 4. This costs 1,609 euros (plus 311 euros for installation and tuning) and includes an air filter cover with an enlarged inlet, sports air filter, power commander, a camshaft developed in-house and a pipe worm called an X-Pipe, which replaces the catalytic converter. Except for the camshaft, the engine remains mechanically untouched. With amazing results. As the test bench curves show, the Raisch-Triumph Thruxton 1200 R is quite clearly above the production model from idle speed to the limiter. The propagated speed increase of 300 rpm, however, did not want to occur. But that doesn’t matter, because despite the tuning, the twin remains a torque motor, although it revs up much more freely and lively. At its peak, the Raisch has measured 13 hp and 19 Nm more. Of course, this has an effect on the driving dynamics.

Raisch-Kit unfortunately not registrable

The following are the values 0-100, 0-140, 0-200 km / h, each series / tuning 3.5 to 3.7, 6.2 to 6.0, 15.3 to 14.4 seconds. You read that correctly, the series is two tenths faster up to 100 km / h. This is due to the fact that the front wheel of the Tuning-Triumph Thruxton 1200 R is difficult to keep on the ground, and that costs time. The difference becomes clearer with the draft. The series takes exactly 5.0 seconds from 50 to 100 and further to 150 km / h, the Raisch only 4.5 seconds. Half a second doesn’t sound like much, but from the point of view of the series it is a whopping 10 percent.

On the road it looks like this: If, for the sake of simplicity, the acceleration is assumed to be linear, the series needs a good 104 meters from 50 to 100 km / h, the Raisch-Triumph Thruxton 1200 R does it around ten meters earlier. From 100 to 150 km / h it is just 174 to 158 meters. In plain language, the Raisch simply drives away. You are more than happy to treat her to the jug that was determined during a joint consumption trip (5.2 to 4.7 liters). But no rose without thorns: On the one hand, the Raisch-Kit is not registrable, on the other hand it gets quite loud when the service is called up. Moved in moderation, she pulls a confident, bass-heavy soundscape behind her. Still: well done, men!
