Ducati Scrambler Icon in the driving report
Vehicle or attitude to life?
At the press launch in Palm Springs, California, the Ducati Scrambler Icon was the first model of the new product family to show how much spirit of the 1970s it is.
"Welcome to the Land of Joy! “Americana live music, table tennis, short films, street art, campfires. No, the presentation of a new motorcycle usually looks different, more objective and sober. But like Mario Alvisi, Brand Director of the new S.crambler Ducati, immediately clarifies, Scrambler is not just a motorcycle, but a way of life. “We started with our own needs for a motorcycle”, says the man in his mid-thirties, “simple, uncomplicated, driving. Scrambler is about fun – Scrambler is about fun. ”This is an alternative to the performance-oriented higher, faster, further, which also and especially at Ducati represents a central value of the company philosophy.

Vehicle or attitude to life?
Ducati Scrambler Icon, Classic, Full Throttle and Urban Enduro will be positioned as a separate sub-brand, comparable to the DS models of the car manufacturer Citroen. Or, as Alvisi says, “as the extroverted son of the Ducati mom”. So they should be uncomplicated and accessible, embody the new and thus old, simple virtues of motorcycling. Cynics may call this a trendy lifestyle product, Ducati calls it “Post Heritage” and emphasizes that these are not retro collectibles, but essentially modern motorcycles that are intended to appeal to a young or young-at-heart who thinks differently. Even if the Scrambler Icon with a base price of 8390 euros represents the entry-level entry into the world of Ducati in the future, it will also remain premium – entry-level premium. The Icon fulfills this requirement – like the three other Ducati Scramblers, which are significantly more expensive at 9790 euros – even when sniffing at the presentation in the evening.
Clean processing quality
Without question, the Ducati Scramblers are honest, high-quality sculptures. What looks like metal here is also metal: mudguards, tank, emblems, even the timing belt covers of the L-Twin. Everywhere there are beautiful parts such as the tank cap, elaborate benches or the neat headlights with integrated LED position light. There is a lot of love in the details here, and the clean processing quality underlines this. So far, so good, bravissimo! But old-school coolness and a high-quality appearance alone do not make a good motorcycle. Unfortunately, the weather in the Jacinto Mountains in southern California presented itself from its capricious side on the following day of driving. “It never rains in California”? No way, but the wonderfully curved mountain roads in the Santa Rosa National Park also enjoy ten degrees, showers and fog.
The driving experience of the Ducati Scrambler Icon is determined through and through by the ergonomics: low seat height, intimate contact with the narrow waist through a small recess in the tight bench, deeply placed, wide footrests. The huge, very wide and high handlebars come far towards the pilot – this is incredibly comfortable and can perhaps best be described as an “enduro cruiser”. In any case, the need to mill through the pocky asphalt of the mountain passes on the last furrow certainly does not arise. Every fiber of the Icon says: “Take a seat, relax, trust me, just let it go.” You feel like Steve McQueen in the cult classic “On any Sunday”, just without racing ambition. The calm front sets the pace with its 18-inch device – the motto is harmonious curve swing on 6/10 attack.
Ducati Scrambler weighs 186 kilos
Then the 186 kilos lightweight Ducati Scrambler (factory specification) with playful handling, turns almost weightless and keeps the line clean. The character of the drive fits this perfectly. The air-cooled 803 cubic Desmo-Twin, known from the Monster 796, has undergone a treatment with fabric softener. Just a single throttle valve costs a few horsepower, but in conjunction with eleven degrees of valve overlap creates wonderfully smooth power delivery. Already from almost 2500 tours – and thus noticeably earlier than in the old Monster – the two-valve engine takes on gas and then flutters through the speed range with pressure and throaty charm, but thankfully a subtle exhaust tone. Even if these 75 HP do not work with the verve of a Yamaha MT-07 – the performance is completely adequate. Squeezing is of little use and does not fit the nature of the scrambler at all. The same applies if curve swing is to become curve pretzels with late brakes. Then the front becomes a bit stubborn and wants to be brought into line with force.
The chassis of the Ducati Scrambler behaves similarly, springs and dampens honestly to directly, but with its not exactly super-sensitive response on bad surfaces, it forces you to take some speed away. Doesn’t matter, it’s okay. Just like the ABS single disc brake on the front wheel, which anchors perfectly enough and, with its nice controllability, turns deceleration into a relaxation exercise. The only fly in the scrambler soup was the gearbox of the brand new test machine, which with bony shiftability and an idle between gears five and six did not quite match the otherwise pleasing easy-going vibe.
Plenty of accessories and even a range of clothing
However, the option of factory customizing using various accessories is entirely in line with the character of the series. Tank panels in a wild look made of aluminum or carbon, different fenders and handlebars, Termignoni exhaust (also as a raised version), replacement of wire-spoke or cast rims, three seats – the Ducati Scrambler should be understood as a kit from which the customer can compete Surcharge can put together his individual motorcycle. As an aside, it should also be mentioned that a coordinated range of clothing is also available from Ducati dealers.
So what is the bottom line? A lovingly made, modern, uncomplicated motorcycle for an audience for whom motorcycling is not about tenths of a second, but about experience and accessible fun. The young fathers and mothers of the Ducati Scrambler obviously knew exactly what they wanted and the implementation of this idea was convincing. Behind the lush marketing broadside is far more than a fashion item. The Scrambler is an honest, personable motorcycle for Kevlar flannel and jet helmet wearers, those who want to slow down and those who want to slow down. MOTORRAD is looking forward to getting to know you better under better conditions.
