The dark side of power

Suzuki’s new 184 hp B-King power bike can be lamb-like, tame to the touch. But woe, you pull a little harder on the cable…

Respect ?? That is probably what it was primarily about when Suzuki put a true over-naked bike in the limelight in 2001. The B-King, a macho bike in a pit bull dress, which demoted all current big bikes to lap dogs. A study that hit like a hammer back then. At the moment there was speculation that Suzuki would let the spectacular part go into series production. But nothing happened. Because at first Suzuki had not even thought of ever producing the Terminator on wheels. It was only the huge response that made the company bosses ponder. At the end of 2005, Suzuki presented the GSR 600, a kind of Bonsai B-King, in which at least design features of the concept study were found.

Now, six years after its presentation, it is here, the real B-King, the great, the mighty. Visually no less radical, no less impressive than the study. A truly brute bike that with its attached tank wings lets the muscles flex like Schwarzenegger. And with the two huge, triangular exhaust funnels, it offers plenty of material for discussion.

Technically, the series machine also remains quite close to the study. The drive is still the Hayabusa engine, but now the 1340 of the latest generation. Sure, the concept bike’s compressor is missing; But with an impressive 184 hp, no one is guaranteed to miss a horse. And the lack of electronic, interactive online frills in the study is more of an advantage than a drawback.

Respect ?? the first meters with the power device are also shaped by this. 184 HP in an undisguised motorcycle, you have to deal with that first of all, mentally and in reality. Safety first. So pull the clutch, which is not particularly smooth, put in gear, and off you go. The four-cylinder purrs gently, powerful, but by no means frightening. Already at 2000 revs there is a lot of pressure and the engine runs smoothly. And attracts so bearishly that you shift into the next gear at 5000 revs at the latest. A very casual, confident way of getting around. And it’s completely easy.

Caution hot!

So why respect? This notices very quickly if you let a gear stand a little longer during a sprint and open the gas a little further. Then there is fire under the roof! In the first, the front wheel never stays on the ground; in the second, too, it strives towards the sky. From 5000 revolutions, there is no end of smoke, accompanied by noticeable vibrations despite the balance shaft. Power in abundance that requires responsibility and experience in handling the throttle. Especially since, in contrast to the Kawasaki ZZR 1400, the B-King is not limited in terms of power or torque, but can freely develop its power in every gear. The top speed alone is blocked at 250 km / h ?? so that the seat does not become an ejection seat.

The rear 200 Dunlop ?? Thank goodness the series didn’t inherit the study’s 240 ?? has so much trouble with this thrust. The fact that he paints black lines on the asphalt out of the curve will delight one or the other. But it also indicates that the ridge is a narrow one, that a sensitive hand is appropriate, especially in incalculable soil conditions. A traction control would certainly be a useful feature. Even when braking, there are no electronic helpers available. For the time being, in spring 2008, the B-King will come with ABS. However, if you can restrain yourself and bring some body control with you, you can let the B-King run quickly. It certainly doesn’t behave as lightly as a super sports car, but by no means more clumsy than other big bikes in this displacement category. On the contrary, some 1300s seem unwieldy.

Jahn

The huge mufflers emphasize the spirited character of the Suzuki B-King.

Although you can still feel the weight of around 250 kilograms at a slow pace, the Suzi seems a little sluggish around the steering axis. But once she has picked up a little speed, she can be circled around tight curves without much physical effort. Although the Dunlop Qualifiers do not provide crystal clear transparency, they harmonize quite well with the B-King in contrast to some other machines. In an inclined position, it remains stable on course, does not seem wobbly, nor does it follow every bump. After the first impressions, an inspiring motorcycle that on the one hand can pretend to be pious, on the other hand can become a wolf at any time. Definitely one that re-levels the horizon in its category ?? respect.
