Meeting in general assembly on Monday in Brussels, the union of European motorcycle manufacturers (ACEM) unanimously decided to appoint Stefan Pierer – CEO of KTM – as chairman replacing Herbert Diess – CEO of BMW.

ACEM in brief

ACEM brings together eleven manufacturers representing twenty brands and fourteen national associations. There are naturally BMW, Ducati, KTM, Peugeot, Piaggio and Triumph but also the four Japanese (Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki) and Harley-Davidson, since it is enough to have an official seat in Europe..

Born in 1994 from the merger of the Motorcycle Industry Liaison Committee (COLIMO, created in 1962 and bringing together eight national associations) and ACEM (Association of European Motorcycle Manufacturers, founded in 1990 by the eight main European manufacturers ), ACEM estimates today that the motorcycle sector weighs 10 billion euros and 100,000 employees in Europe.

At the end of the meeting, Stefan Pierer insisted on the strong involvement of ACEM "in the development of a sustainable transport system". Believing that "the environment and social responsibility are key elements of the public debate", the boss of KTM indicated that he wished "to work on these priorities for the benefit of the two-wheeler industry in Europe".

Stefan Pierer, 51, has been CEO of KTM since 1992. He is also the company’s main shareholder..

After studying management and energy management at the University of Loeben in Austria, he founded in 1987 CROSS Industries AG, an investment company specializing in the restructuring of medium-sized industries in Austria which today employs 3,400 people and generates a turnover of more than 900 million euros per year.

The ACEM General Assembly also invested Leo Francesco Mercanti, executive director of Aprilia and vice-president of Piaggio, as vice-president while Fritz Geri, executive vice-president of BMW Motorrad, takes the post of second vice-president.
