The 848 continued its career in 2013. The superb silhouette initiated by the 1098 therefore continues to enrich the Ducati catalog, and to offer a sport that is both captivating and more accessible than the Panigale..
Since the duo 916 – 748, Ducati has always offered dreams with a large model with Superbike accents, and a little sister more accessible but with the same fantasy clothes, less trunk. With the 848, we took a further step: as usual it took a magnificent hypersport plastic, and in the twin, we had big cavalry available – all for the price of a Japanese hypersport..
This desire to bring the SBK into the hands of more bikers logically led the Italian to offer even more. This is the mission of this 848 evo, which hides its cheek well while being devilishly provocative. Rest assured the fans: the drawing of the beautiful house! The pots under the saddle, the impressive single-sided arm, the timeless trellis frame are in concert. As beautiful, so racy, you will have to take a close look at the ‘evo’ sticker to recognize it. Or dig into the bowels of the beast. Let’s see…. Ah ben vi: Ducati has again drawn parts and solutions in the competition department to add watts to the 848. From 136, the power climbs to 140 horsepower. The twin Testastretta Evoluzione now announces the same potato as the late 999 of 2005, weighing 168 kg (18 less than the former hypersport). A little more torque and the boiler allows itself to hit the bar of 10 mkg. The solution ? Directly from MotoGP: new elliptical-shaped intake ducts allow a more efficient air passage section by 30%, equivalent to 60 mm. With that, the twin breathes vigorously, and the combustion chambers compress the gases much harder. The compression ratio here reaches 13.2 to 1. The valve lift changes from 11.5 to 13 mm. Further on, there are 2 lambda sensors and catalytic converters. More powerful, the 848 is also cleaner, passing the draconian Euro3 regime.
As if to merge better with the new ‘Dark Stealth’ color, the engine boards are painted black (remember that those of the 848 were the first to be manufactured under vacuum with the Vacural process – more rigidity, a wall thickness uniform and weight gain on arrival).
Bonus: the twin develops more watts, and requires less maintenance. Service interval increases to 12,000 km.
Small 1098, the 848 had recovered a lot of the chassis of its elder. The 848 evo has even fewer qualms. It takes on the trellis frame with 34mm thick 1.5mm tubing, wicked single-sided, 43mm inverted fork, and its name evo means it also stings monoblock braking and a steering damper. With 320mm Brembo discs and one-piece radial calipers, the Diva will improve its feel even further. To save a little weight (catalytic converters, it weighs), the front cradle is now in magnesium.
Fan of MotoGP and SBK, you will not be disappointed with the on-board electronics. The all-digital dashboard may not be very readable when you want to know the engine speed quickly, but it gives you everything you want to know with a boost on the control gear: rpm, speed, running time. tower, ambient temperature, battery voltage, water temperature, maintenance indicator, double trip + reserve count, and DDA control panel if applicable. The DDA? Ah yes, I forgot. The data acquisition system is optional on the 848 evo.
With its improvements, it feels even more the track and the competition – an ersatz when you think that its displacement excludes it from any championship (too much displacement for the supersport, and not enough against the big 1000). But admit that at face level, and with 140 donkeys in the moulbif, there is a lot to have fun.
