Biker test: Jean-Michel
At the house of
Ducati, ST stands for Sport-Touring. I bought my Ducati ST4S
new in December 2002. It replaced a TRIUMPH 900
Sprint of 1996 which gave me complete satisfaction in solo
and as a duo. I spend all my summer holidays on a motorbike with
woman and luggage. We travel about 3,500 kms over 2 weeks.
Why a Ducati ST4S ?
Externally this bike has a nice look, especially in red.
Well finished, it has perfect equipment and good quality.
It is easy to install on it and it is immediately well established.
The driving position is pleasant and slightly
inclined (I am 1.85m). The saddle is a bit hard but we get used to it
very quickly.
The start is typical Ducati it vibrates a little
cold and the twin-cylinder snores well especially if we equip
the beast with adequate pots and a K.N that releases him
bronchi. The only complaint about the sound comes from this clutch
dry slamming in slow motion, matched with a slightly
hard !
The first turns of the wheels urge caution: the beast
is nervous and the revs are impressive.
It pushes hard, very hard on each report and far in
towers.
The gearbox is very smooth at
usage. The dashboard is easy to read and complete. The gauge at
gasoline on liquid crystal dial is super practical and accurate.
The ST4 doesn’t really like the city; she grazes a little below 2500
turns and gear changes should be frequent.
On the other hand, on the road, it’s a treat, even as a duo. With
its 210 kilos, its 106 horsepower and the engine of the 996, it is hyper
light and comfortable everywhere.
The original tires (Pirelli) grip well in dry and wet.
As for the front and rear suspensions, they are perfect and
offer many settings.
Powerful and fast on the highway, the ST4S gets quite tiring
for lack of effective protection like many motorcycles of this kind.
My height has something to do with it as well. Whether in town,
on the road or motorway, the passenger is always comfortably seated,
thanks to a position of the footrests, an inclination of the saddle
and well-placed grip handles. The motorcycle keeps
all its road qualities.
I traveled a thousand kilometers in a month on his handlebars
and under rotten weather. My average consumption is 6.5 liters
every 100 kilometers.
After trying models from other brands,
I think she has no real competitor in the sport style
touring.

Me, Bridgestone tires are over! I have S20s on the R6 and I am frankly more than disappointed! For the S20 the tests also promised a revolutionary tire, and well I am extremely disappointed !
The bike slides in all directions … We brake from the rear to stabilize the bike before the curve and the rear starts to chase! I never had this problem with Dunlop Sportmax, Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa or even the Pilot Power 2 which were better … On track it can be nice, but on road with trees along the paths I find it’s a bit dangerous…
In addition the S20 at the end of 2000 terminals it was dead … Well, so much the better rather !
Obi, you didn’t have a pressure problem?
it seems strange to me what happened to you …
Salvation,
I don’t like the S20s. Nor the Bridgs in general. But what you report amazes me all the same.
On which machine?
Death in 2,000 km? Where do you ride?
You must indeed have had a problem on this train.
