When you have a big sister stuffed with watts, equipped with equipment escaped from NASA and cut to disembowel all types of roads, you look at her with admiration … and you are furious not to have so many. The 950 Multistrada is however as interesting as the 1260, in a less thunderous register. Even attractive face, obvious versatility, less intimidating, she can play a lot of strengths. However, Ducati has heard his grumbles and brings him satisfaction. An S version is equipped with elements that significantly enhance its level of attractiveness.
We don’t all need the power of a sportswoman to take a trail. With its 113 horsepower twin as well as a more touring-oriented part-cycle, the 950 is opening up to a wider audience, who will not have to deal with excessive enthusiasm..
The refinement it gets with this S version follows. The big plus is the adoption of the Skyhook Evo semi-active suspension. By taking into account data from several accelerometers, ABS sensors and the new I.M.U inertial unit, the system constantly adapts the damping. The 4 driving modes and the adjustment of the load (pilot alone, pilot with luggage, pilot with passenger or pilot with passenger and luggage) allow for a dynamic à la carte. Which can be adjusted with finesse, because we can enter more into the system by fine-tuning the front and rear. The manufacturer announces a total of 400 combinations of parameters. Except that in the end, 95% of users will leave the electronics to work alone once the discovery stage has passed. Like these ovens which have 80 cooking modes, while we are going to use 3 on a daily basis. But we always have this feeling of being able to push our investigations as needed or when we want.
Highly technological suspensions in the main course, that’s appreciable, Miss Multistrada. A dessert would delicately finish the appetizer before hitting the road. Here, it will be backlit commodos, a keyless starting system, an Up & Down shifter, a cruise control, LEDs with the DCL function to illuminate in the bends according to the angle taken by the bike, a high-resolution color TFT screen (identical to that of the Multistrada 1260 S and Enduro) and the possibility of taking optional spoked rims, allowing some excursions off bitumen. Heated grips too? Not yet. Optionally, for a 16 bar grinding wheel, it is medium. A dubious choice, which Ducati is far from being the only one to perpetuate.
Come on, we’ll pass the pill with what else is in the endowment, shared with the standard 950.
What do we find? An adjustable screen, VHC hill start aid, ABS cornering, traction control, self-extinguishing indicators, the 4 driving modes, lightened rims, two 12V sockets, a USB port, a more flexible hydraulic clutch control, and that very Italian attitude. A character and a plastic that we show, that we cultivate, that we impose with the gesture.
Here, not the same weight – The S weighs 3 kilos more. Negligible: with the power of the twin cylinder and almost 10 mkg of torque, this is not what will change the conduct.
Less powerful but with equipment frankly approaching the 1260 S, the new 950 S Multistrada comes with a much lower price. What to afford a good dose of premium Ducati in trail sauce. The ticket for a “mid-size” trail is still quite sturdy. By widening the visual field, we perceive that the competition is much more affordable; even a Tiger 800 XRt looks reasonable next to it. You have to go look at MV-Agusta to find more expensive. This gives us a pretty good measure of the positioning of this MTS 950 S.
