The Diavel is not just a success for Ducati. It is also one of the most spectacular machines that the brand has created. A bit of a roadster, a lot of power-cruiser, surprisingly agile and formidable in terms of charisma, it has convinced the market and pleased many anonymous and famous alike.. Does he need more to continue his career? Barely. The 2015 version, which we will call phase II, arrives in spring 2014 with its share of developments.
Sign of upheaval? The new Diavel was presented at the Geneva Motor Show. A heresy for the fans; a tactical choice for Audi, the new owner of Ducati. But let us leave politics in its wanderings. Let’s go back to Diavelli II and dispel the fear of fashion victims. Does the new add a bit of old to the old? Absolutely not. A few touches of style, a more opulent appearance, a touch of aggressiveness in the exhausts. The Diavel remains the Diavel! Only connoisseurs will impact on the changes.
It is above all a level of the lighthouse that the expression has asserted itself. Full LED, the optical unit now forms a half-ring of light when switched on. More expressive, the headlight is highlighted by a finely redesigned brushed aluminum cowling. Near the other end, the double-gun is replaced by a pair of beveled exhausts. We have cited the most visible modifications; let’s stay a bit to see how far the stylists have refined the plastic. The black aluminum air inlets are enlarged, the shape of the radiator scoops simplified, the light bars more integrated into the scoops, and a new deflector is embedded in front of the cockpit….
…A rather special place where the rider can appreciate the two dashboards (LCD + TFT), a large aluminum handlebars with variable section – raised on the Phase II, a flatter and better padded saddle, and a road which can seem intimidating. by the fast-paced Diavel muscle. This bike has so much personality that you almost forget the origin of its engine. The late 1198 twin Superbike. Deflated at 162 hp (anyway), this Testastretta II was improved in 2015 by a little technical cure. By redesigning the intake and exhaust ducts and reintroducing dual ignition (Dual Sark), engine manufacturers have not sought to increase power but to strengthen the torque curve from low revs. The power therefore remains at 162 cannons while the torque gains a pinch of mkg with a peak of 130.5 Nm (128 previously). Bologna takes the opportunity to space out the periodicity of major overhauls, which will now be carried out every 30,000 kms..
Part-cycle unchanged for the Diavel II, but did it need some improvements?!? Not really. Few reproaches can be made to him. The tubular steel trellis frame knows how to hold its own, the big 240 rear tire throws a max and surprises with its agility, and the equipment both mechanical and electronic hardly needs to evolve for the moment. The 1200 Diavel still claims a 50mm Marzocchi inverted fork and fully adjustable Sachs monoshock, 320mm slabs with one-piece Brembo radial calipers up front and 265mm track at the rear, combined ABS , keyless start (well almost, has to be in the pocket), 8-level traction control, 3 drive modes *, and a very reasonable 210 kg dry weight – 239 full facts.
The Diavel II is far from wiping out the past. It retains everything that makes its identity, its unreasonable and fascinating aspect, its motorization burned with a barrel of powder. The evolution is sensitive, enough to give it a (a little) more marked aplomb. The Carbon version benefits from the same evolutions with a weight gain and the characteristics intrinsic to this version: carbon parts, forged rims, stitching on the saddle for the red color, and more toned colors..
* Sport
With 162hp, Sport mode offers the Diavel pilot an adrenaline-fueled ride and allows the throttle to be fully opened for maximum acceleration. Ensuring full availability of the Testastretta 11 ° DS, Sport mode reduces DTC intervention to level 1 for riders who prefer performance a little closer to the grip limits.
Touring
The Touring mode is also programmed to develop 162hp, with however power delivered more flexibly and in a more progressive manner. Rear axle grip is improved by increasing the DTC intervention level to 3, specially tuned for a pleasant and restful ride, ideal for long journeys and ensuring maximum comfort for both rider and passenger.
Urban
Since driving in the streets requires more attention to the surrounding elements than to the performance of the accelerator, the “Urban” mode instantly transforms the Diavel to give it maneuverability and ease of driving. Engine power is reduced to 100hp and DTC is increased to level 5 for greater system intervention under the most demanding traffic conditions.
