When the first Multistrada arrived, the horizon and the outlook for Ducati grew significantly. Then, the craze for big trails becoming unavoidable, the brand hastened to invest in the niche with its sporty touch and a demonstration of its ideas always marked with character.. Now that the 1200 Multistrada has confirmed its ardor and versatility, it covets ground that would have been deemed improbable for the brand a few years ago. His new play area: adventure. It’s fashionable, it’s exhilarating, the field of discovery is endless, and this scent of going into the unknown has always touched men and machines. The BMW R 1200 GS and KTM Adventure, as well as the revival of the Honda Africa Twin, know the way. Ducati now wants to follow them with the Multistrada 1200 Enduro. Make way, dunes and scorpions! A trail full of superbikes bursts with big ideas, a lot of technology and watts everywhere. Can the All-Terrain-SBK cocktail work? Ducati believes so. And this bike wants us to believe it too.
From the outset, the MTS Enduro impresses. What a face! What a template! Ready to go far, she wants to show off when you look at her closely. Its nose has lengthened, the side plates of the tank are made of aluminum, the mudguard has been modified for better protection, and in terms of presence, we are the opposite of a thin Scrambler. It looks like the bike has eaten a boar so much has increased its stature. What augurs a rising protection and which certainly hides more than that.
Autonomy, much more, in order to reach checkpoints so far away without worry. The tank swallows 30 liters of fuel, which is 50% more than the base Multi. Concretely, it is almost 450 km before feeling the first thirst. What to do Paris-Lyon or Bamako-Dinguiraye in one go.
But if a Multistrada can go on the A6 without worrying about the road, it will be less fun once on the tracks in Guinea. The Enduro version is more suitable because it is ready for a challenge. First, turn the 17-inch spoked rims then take spoke wheels with more off-road dimensions. 19 “120 mm wide at the front and 17” 170 at the rear. This will allow it to equip itself with more adventurous tires if necessary. Originally, it received Pirelli Scorpion Trail II, with a trail-road profile; as an option, Pirelli Scorpion Rally armed with large studs are available.
Then protect the mechanics. It would be stupid to crack a crankcase and spill the engine oil 200 terminals from the first cabin…. An aluminum engine guard takes care of discussing with stones and unwanted people. In case of crossing, the exercise will be facilitated by the raised ground clearance of the 1200 Enduro. With a suspension travel increased to 200 mm (+ 30), it goes to 205 mm. A sufficient value but still below a KTM or Honda (250 mm). However, neither of them can electronically adjust their suspensions. The Mutlistrada Enduro, if: it is equipped as standard with the semi-active Skyhook system. Ride, enjoy, and the on-board control unit takes care of adjusting the damping in real time. Some will laugh that the real adventure is knowing how to adapt to the conditions; others will be ironic that it is necessary to evolve and live with modernity. Both points of view defend each other, but what do you do on a Tibetan track if your Skyhook starts messing around?!? It is not for nothing that KTM does not offer this kind of suspicion on the R version of its Adventure. Weight gain, emm gain ….
The changes don’t stop there. The superb single-sided swingarm is replaced by a double-branch element, supposed to better cope with the hazards, sometimes violent, of side roads. The driving position is also changing with a view to TT use. Refined saddle, higher handlebars, removable rubber pads to recover the strong footrest grip, adjustable rear brake lever height and folding selector; it is always practical to save it in case of gadin. The center stand is standard – handy for chain lubrication, or for tinkering or in the middle of nowhere. The seat has also turned away from the accessible to comply with the canons of the category. It’s high, 870mm, and not adjustable. But there is, as an option, a lower saddle of 20 mm; and a higher one, also 20 mm.
The Multistrada is the Ducati-style trail; who is breathing hard. In the trellis frame, a big engine is on standby, impatient. Originally born in the breeding ground of the Superbike, equipped with the DVT variable valve technology, the desmodromic twin spits the trifle of 160 horsepower at 9500 rpm – 152 since the recalibration of the measurements. To wonder what we could do with so much power. It is not the motorbike that overcomes the slopes and the difficulties; it is the engine which wants to tear what is present under the rear wheel. We will pay more attention to the large torque, from a maximum to 13 mkg. The Enduro being equipped with a shorter first gear and a large muscle under the right wrist, extracting, flying or towing a buffalo will not pose much difficulty..
The classic, rigid tubular steel frame and large 320mm brake discs clamped by Brembo 4-piston radial calipers are taken from the standard Multistrada. The wheelbase differs, increasing by 37mm to 1566mm. For its profile, more stability will be appreciated. Agility will be a bit hampered. Anyway, with the 25 kilos it takes in this evolution, you should not expect to drive an EXC. Does its 257 kg take into account trekking type aluminum suitcases? No, it’s optional. Considering the price and the profile of the machine, Ducati could have supplied them in series.
Where the brand has not butted, it is on electronics. It’s simple: you can find almost everything on the market on it. From the Bosch inertial unit to measure the evolution of the motorcycle on 3 axes to the keyless start system, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is an all-terrain fighter plane. The IMU makes it possible to measure the dynamics of the motorcycle and therefore acts directly on all on-board assistance. And there are many: ABS modulated in curve, adaptive full LED lighting, hill start assistance system “Vehicle Hold Control”, traction control, anti-wheeling, cruise control, and a large 5-inch TFT screen for pilot and control the nerve impulses of the machine. To supervise everything, a choice of 4 maps manages most of the Multistrada’s functions. They work as follows:
the Touring Riding Mode provided a power of 152 hp with a flexible and progressive distribution. Active safety is enhanced with a high level of traction control and DWC intervention. DCT on level 5, ABS on level 3, Skyhook in Medium mode.
The all-terrain spirit of the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is fully expressed with the Enduro Riding Mode which allows to obtain a flexible distribution and a level of intervention of ABS and minimum traction control to facilitate off-road driving. DCT on level 2, ABS on level 1, Skyhook in Soft mode.
By selecting the Sport Driving Mode, power increases to 152 hp with 136 Nm of torque and Sport suspension settings. DCT on level 4, ABS on level 2, Skyhook in Hard mode.
With the Urban Driving Mode, the power is reduced to 100 hp and the suspensions are adjusted to overcome urban obstacles such as speed bumps and manhole covers. DCT on level 6, ABS on level 3, Skyhook in Soft mode.
Do not forget the little extras that it is impossible to do without once you’ve tasted them. I’m talking about the backlit controls, the adjustable bubble, the 2 12V sockets, or the Bluetooth multimedia system. With all this, the Mutistrada 1200 Enduro wants to go straight on the Adventure with a capital A, but not at all in the compass, cock and knife way. Rather Range-Rover, selfies and American Express. Beyond the cliches and divisions, let us point out that it is certainly the only Ducati which can really go everywhere.
To make a Multistrada Enduro “à la carte”, Ducati offers a series of packs to enhance it to your liking:
– Enduro Pack
Selection of Ducati Performance components by Touratech: front fairing and belly pan protect the engine from impacts while the grid for the oil tank and coolant protect from debris. LEDs improve visibility, while rear disc and chain guard protect critical motorcycle parts.
– Touring package
Aluminum side luggage with a capacity of 83 liters, created in collaboration with Touratech, and heated grips make the trip more comfortable, all complemented by a handlebar bag.
– Sport package
