Sack the truth
The really big time of the absolute cheap bags is over. The seasoned motorcyclist is now ready to invest a little more money in a backpack. Eleven everyday all-rounders from 60 to 170 euros had to show what they could do.

When it comes to backpack testing, amazing things always happen in the hallowed halls of the MOTORRAD editorial team. All of a sudden, a considerable part of the colleagues realized that they could actually need a new rucksack again, and they usually approach the bag assessors a bit submissively: “So, in case you don’t know what to do with it after the story …” Which confirms a tester’s assessment: the mobile trunk on the back is still one of the most popular motorcycle accessory items, and accordingly bulging pages in the relevant catalogs support this thesis.

But the backpack market is changing. While five or six years ago hardly any motorcyclist was willing to spend more than 60 euros on a backpack, and the main business – at least that of the relevant discounters – was mostly in the range of 20 to 30 euros, tariffs now apply in the high double-digit euro range. Area as completely normal. And something moves above 100 euros. Why is that, possibly the increased quality awareness? Probably, and the outdoor market, which has been booming for years, is likely to be a major pioneer.
Daypack has blossomed into a lifestyle product
Hardcore-through-the-area-Latscher have always spent a lot of money on sensible equipment, and that rubs off on the motorcycle scene, which is now related to age and financial strength. In addition, the daypack – and that’s what this story is all about – has blossomed into a chic lifestyle product. Everyone, from girlie to grandpa, is now walking around with it, so it is not surprising that motorcyclists cannot ignore the trend towards well-made and therefore somewhat more expensive backpacks.
The test field for this story is also well done across the board. At least when it comes to equipment details that repeatedly caused annoyance in backpack tests that were carried out some time ago. Solid click fasteners, easy-to-grip zip-pullers, neatly sealed seams, flutter-free belts, secured belt ends and stable outer fabrics are a matter of course in this class. The inclined reader will therefore not find any major statements in the plus / minus ratings, the differences are marginal.
Waterproof or water repellent?
Whether a backpack should be waterproof or just water-repellent is a fundamental question. If you don’t like the somewhat flat and rubbery appearance of the waterproof bags and prefer a slightly more textile handle, you can hardly avoid installing a loosely enclosed or integrated rain cover in heavy rain. The question of the closure of the main compartment is almost as philosophical. The main competitors here are roll and zip fasteners.
With the roll closure there are still the variants “Cross-and-down-closer” exist. All systems have advantages and disadvantages, and even rather unusual solutions as in the specific case with Touratech (zip in the back) and the QBag (double drawstring) have their charm. Ultimately, the advice can only be: it’s best to try it yourself. The risk of being completely wrong is low, at least in the models we tested.

Givi Gravel-T
providers: Givi, Tel. 09 11/95 51 00), www.givimoto.com;

minus:
- Shoulder straps are not padded enough and may be too short for thick jackets / upper bodies, waist strap a bit too narrow

This is how MOTORRAD tests
Klaus Herder
Man and machine: After each test lap, the driving impressions landed directly in the test protocol.
The specification in the test invitation was: “Backpack for everyday use (daypack), volume approx. 20 to 35 liters, suitability for motorcycles, d. H. waterproof or at least water-repellent (waterproof not only via a separate rain cover), suitability for motorways up to around 150 km / h.” Two copies of each test sample went into the race in order to be able to identify outliers if necessary. For the volume and material information, MOTORRAD relied on the manufacturer’s information, the weight given is a MOTORRAD measured value. The driving tests were carried out with a five kilogram heavy “Standard luggage”, Consists of a 15.6-inch laptop, one-liter water bottle, motorcycle jacket thermal lining, sweater, a pair of gloves and a wallet. With every loaded rucksack, the MOTORRAD endurance test Yamaha MT-07 went on an extensive test lap around Stuttgart, which, in addition to city and country road traffic, also had a part of the motorway to offer.
The water tightness test was carried out in the sanitary area of the editorial office, where every backpack was given 1.5 liters of water via a high-pressure water sprayer. At the final “Dry test” Previous test experiences were verified in the MOTORRAD conference room. In addition, all the zippers, compression straps, the carrying systems and all the equipment features had to face the curious fiddling instinct of other colleagues. Finally, the testers collected statements on the quality of workmanship and practicality. The final evaluation is based solely on the points awarded in the individual test categories. In addition, there is again the absolutely subjective “Hit list of the testers”, However, it has no influence on the test results and is only intended to show the willing reader that the official test winner can definitely be the personal favorite – but does not necessarily have to be.

MOTORCYCLE final scoring
The backpacks scored points.
And once again it has been proven: BMW does not win every MOTORCYCLE group test! Victory went to a polo house-brand product manufactured by a well-known outdoor outfitter. But solid goods can also be found in the other places. Even the taillight still drives a safe test result “Good” on.
However, this does not make the selection any easier for the potential backpack buyer; because the spectrum ranges from the ultrapuristic “Just-sack” (such as von Buse, Givi, hero and Touratech) to the almost completely equipped “Zip orgy” à la Alpinestars, BMW and Vanucci. The exact study of the data boxes is particularly worthwhile this time. This should make it possible to find your own personal bag favorite.
