Chic instead of clean

While the automakers are more and more ecological models, scooters continue to pollute the air

In front of the cafe a young woman rises from her scooter, takes the helmet, shakes her hair and beckons the others too. Urban life: Scenes of this kind are used by advertisers and photographers as cliches to present the scooter (new German: Scooter) as a lifestyle vehicle. This works surprisingly well, the sales figures rise. The Italian Piaggio Group, with brands such as Vespa, Piaggio, Gilera or Aprilia, reports about 15 percent of the small 50 cubic scooters for the small 50 cubic scooters. "We sell about 25,000 units each year," says Ralph Zimmer from Piaggio Marketing.
For the environment and residents, however, the Renaissance of the scooter has a downside. Because while automobiles always have to fulfill stricter exhaust limit values, the mostly designed scooters are still dragged heavily as a two-stroke.
New 50s scooters only need to fulfill the tab of Euro-2 emission standard, which allows a pollutant emission of a total of 1.2 grams hydrocarbon (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) per kilometer. For new cars, however, since this week is necessarily the strict standard Euro 5. Absurgeable effect: A scooter may dismiss so much of the toxic exhaust gases HC and NOx in city and land air as seven heavy limousines or sports cars.
Older two-stroke scooters – some of them avoided a blue oil banner after Best Trabbi tradition – are even rule-right air funding. Measurements of the TuV-Rheinland Berlin-Brandenburg showed that such companions emit up to 50 times as much pollutants as a new car.
The commuter, which leaves his car for environmental reasons and instead drives with the scooter to work, saves a few euros to fuel costs, but the respiratory air is burdened by a multiple. Improvement from the legislation is not in sight. After all, manufacturers such as Honda or Piaggio voluntarily search cleaner solutions and offer pollutant 50 cubic scooters with four-stroke four-valve technology and catalytic converter.
Piaggio also wants to be the first to the topic hybrid. Here work combustion and electric motor in combination. Safe-saving lithium-ion batteries allow it even to drive short distances quietly and exhaust-free in electric mode – then at least the air before the cafe remains a bit better.

  1. incomprehensible
Really completely incomprehensibly the approval of these noisy stinking air-resistant … Cheap-four times. In addition, in the morning professional traffic, especially in the MOfavianization with 25 km / h a Harakiri campaign for the pilots and nerve sample for all considerable 4-wheel road users. Then dear OPV or an electric bike away from the autopists.

  2. Scooter
Alternative are 125 scooters four-stroke 90km H, available with catalator and Euro 3 consumption about 3 liters of Superbenzin, Z.b. ATU 1500, KYMKO, CA. 1800 euros. Much driving pleasure great brakes good chassis.

  3. Immediate need for action
One stroke in the face of the two-wheel drive industry, which will gladly present your products as an environmentally friendly alternative for the car. I also wonder how a 3 hp Vespa with 50 cc may need the 3 liters super at 100 km, while now many small cars are content with under 5 liters.
