A high-end jet with a sporty look, available in 7 different liveries
Sizes from XS to XXL, 3 shell sizes, from € 329.90 to € 349.90
Some rumors suggest that it would soon be banned "for our safety"! Who is that ? Well the jet helmet, of course ! By the way, you should always be wary of people who want your good … As far as I’m concerned, I like jet riding almost in all circumstances and after having worn an X-Lite X402-GT to the rope , or even a little beyond, this HJC R-PHA JET is timely for a new long-term test.
At HJC, the R-PHA range is synonymous with high-end. It is, in the integral, the reference worn by contract drivers at the highest level, whether Ben Spies or Jorge Lorenzo. Since then, the range has grown: there is an R-PHA X dedicated to off-roading as well as an R-PHA JET, whose name corresponds well to reality. Its rather sporty look will delight fans of the genre..
Those like me who use a jet as often as possible appreciate these helmets for their light weight and wide field of vision. The possibility of riding with your nose in the wind, in town or in the countryside, amplifies the pleasure you have in riding a motorbike. But for long trips, there are still some prerequisites: comfort, not too much noise and a real quality of construction, with a screen that does not vibrate, stays in the position you ask for, ventilation effective, all of this is essential. Thus, a good jet should have almost the same qualities as an integral..
Improved construction quality
I haven’t always had that good memories with HJC helmets in the past and their biodegradable side irritated me at times. With this R-PHA JET, it is clear that the finish and the build quality have taken a real leap forward. The ventilation knobs handle well and even with mid-season gloves (HJC removed the round knobs for easier to handle switches), the double-D buckle strap handles just as easily. The subjective feeling of quality when taken in hand has clearly improved. The foams do not move, do not flinch, the assemblies are solid, the feeling is excellent. The same feeling of well-being when putting on, with interior coverings that are soft to the touch and perfectly in place. Small funny detail: when you lower the screen completely, you have the feeling, accompanied by a small mechanical noise, that the cap stiffens and fits perfectly to your head.
In short, a faultless that allows him, secretly, to dream of tickling Arai SZ and Shoei J-Cruise, the references of the segment? Let’s say that for that, the road to perfection is crossed step by step. On my test model, the rear spoiler shows a small shift in the stickers. To review…
An appreciable lightness
Received in size M, this jet remains below the 1,200 gram mark, because it does not include an internal sunscreen, but the smoked screen is delivered as standard. For my part, I am delighted and I appreciate the difference compared to the previous X-Lite that I was using. Remember that the R-PHA JET actually uses the shell of the full R-PHA composed of carbon fiber, aramid and fiberglass. The lightness is therefore real and particularly appreciable in everyday life. Just like handling the screen and changing it.
In short, the first days, the first weeks, the first months of use give a rather positive feeling. This HJC R-PHA JET is quite suitable for the use I ask of it, that is to say light in everyday life and competent on the road. Whether on neo-retro roadsters or on machines that deposit, this jet has rather done the job.
Almost perfectly versatile
Although the lens is anti-fog treated, in cool weather I noticed a little fog on the lower part of the lens, at low speed only (like below 40 km / h). It’s not inherently bothersome, but it would be better if it didn’t happen. Another complaint, which in my eyes does not give it perfect versatility: the screen is not long enough. Oh, it is played a few millimeters and it may also be a question of morphology, but still as far as I’m concerned, there are some eddies of air on the bottom of the goatee as well as some rising humidity on the lower chin which prevented me from being perfectly comfortable in winter. Too bad, because without it, it was ready to be a traveling companion in all seasons and all circumstances.
Strong points
- Lightness and a feeling of lightness
- Comfort
- Efficient ventilation
- Sporty look
- High speed stability, no aero turbulence
Weak points
- Screen that could have gone down 2 mm lower for even more versatility
- Still a little effort on the finish
- A little fogging at low speed
- Some will blame the lack of integrated sunscreen (not me …)
Test conditions
- Itinerary: worn for a few months every day and on roads during walks and tests.
