The tire that transfers 10 horsepower better to the rear wheel
The supersport tire that reconciles road and track
In the Pirelli family, I ask for the new supersport tire: the Diablo Rosso Corsa, which succeeds the Diablo Rosso Corsa III. The new kid inherits the best of the SC3 and Supercorsa SP.
When we say supersport, we also mean track and that is also the goal of the youngest…. a road tire capable of going on the track as well…. thus competing with the Dunlop SportSmart and Michelin PowerPure.
For Pirelli, the Rosso Corsa is above all characterized by its ability to better transfer the power of a motorcycle to the ground. The manufacturer even announces the tire’s capacity to transfer 10 more horsepower than its competitors! The icing on the cake, the Rosso Corsa is the first tire to offer customization: each rider can choose to have 3 customizable elements on the tire: his name or nickname, a logo and a flag !
And there’s nothing like a fast track to test a tire like this: the Assen track !
Technical
Pirelli has filed for 50 tire patents, including 28 directly from its experience in the Superbike World Championship. Because the brand insists on its 8 vehicles and its team present at all the WSBK competitions to create the tires and assist the drivers with more than 5,000 tires used on all the circuits. The Rosso Corsa benefits directly from 25 of these patents and 6 technologies: HPSC, ICS, EPT, 3LC, HSB and FDG.
HPSC (High Performance Single Cord) technology and the name of Pirelli’s 0 ° steel belt: 1.5 kilometers of cables surrounding the tire with specific and different spacing from the center to the sides. The cable wrap pattern in the center ensures performance on the road, while the specific wrap on the shoulders ensures for performance on the track.
ICS (Ideal Contour Shaping) technology is a new generation of the 0 ° steel belt, used in the MIRS manufacturing system. It helps to distribute the pressure and offers more stability.
EPT (Enhanced Patch Technology) is a casing that offers several different radii of curvature, in order to increase the tire’s ground contact surface.
3LC (3 Layers Compound) technology is the use of the 3 zones of the tire’s rubber composition: the central composition which ensures stability and longevity, and the 2 lateral zones which ensure maximum grip.
FGD (Functional Groove Design) technology characterizes the shape and grooves of the tire. The front tire is thus designed for regular evacuation of water. The rear includes transverse tread patterns between the tread and the shoulders for water drainage and for the heat build-up of the road compound as well as a slick zone on the shoulders.

The HSB (H Shaped Bead) is an H-shaped bead, the new profile design that optimizes the firmness of the rubber on the shoulders (ensuring stability and precision on the angle) in accordance with the carcass to avoid any risk loss of control when the driving pace is very high on the track.
In terms of rubber, the Rosso Corsa incorporates special resins and plasticizers optimized in terms of chemical properties and quantity to achieve the best balance of grip in the dry and in the wet. It also benefits from a new drying process which provides longer tire life..
The composition 100% Carbon Black (Black Compound) less rigid, especially at medium-low temperatures, allows a very rapid rise in temperature and reduces the temperature differences on the surface of the tire to avoid the effect of variation in performance and discontinuity between two rubber zones.
In the end, the Diablo Rosso Corsa offers all the characteristics of the Diablo Corsa III in terms of comfort and stability, while considerably improving handling and grip – especially in the wet – but above all the longevity of these performances on the road and on the circuit..
Sizes
The Diablo Rosso Corsa is available in the following sizes: front, 120 / 70ZR17; and rear 160 / 60ZR17, 180 / 55ZR17, and 190 / 50ZR17 as well as 190 / 55ZR17.
Track test
Pirelli announces that the Diablo Rosso Corsa is capable of transferring at least 10 horsepower more than any other tire on every section of track, from the bike to the ground, with a maximum reached at 40 horsepower, with tests having been carried out on a CBR 1000 RR. For these tests, tools – common to those used to analyze telemetry data from the WSBK – measured the parameters required to calculate the power transfer from the tire to the ground, in terms of acceleration (both on the tread and on the shoulders), speed
instantaneous, and angle grip. For different degrees of angles, the measurements were concentrated on the exit of the turn and on the maximum bank when re-accelerating. The final calculations took into account the load of the machine, including both the weight of the motorcycle and that of the rider, the actual Force transferred by the tire to the ground is measured by the scientific formula F = m * a (force = weight * acceleration). The Power output is obtained by multiplying the force by the speed (P = F * v). In this way, the members of the Research & Development department were able to measure the power that the motorcycle transferred to the ground, second after second, centimeter by centimeter in the various bends of the Sicilian circuit..
The Assen circuit is one of the fastest, with many corners taken on the corner at top speed. The lap times regularly lead to over 290 km / h with an average lap speed of over 170 km / h! Nothing like testing a tire capable of transferring the maximum possible power to the angle.
20 motorcycles are waiting for us…. 600 and 1000 cm3 in full: R1, GSXR 1000, RSV4, CBR100RR, ZX10R, S1000RR, R6, ZX6R, CBR600RR…. The rider just has to choose his color or the bike that bears his name on the tire !
But above all, it allows the tire to be tested on several machines and to compare its grip on the circuit with its experience of the machines..
Contact…. GEX growls. The exit of the pits is done at measured speed…. Especially since the weather is very cool and the circuit is bathed in the humidity of Assen. The mist therefore invades the track and the mist fills the helmets of the unfortunate without pinlock.
First right, pin left at a reasonable speed, then it’s already a straight stretch before a right then a left and a new very fast right. It’s only the warm-up lap, but the tire immediately gives you confidence. And when the pace picks up, including when accelerating on the corner, stability is there. The agreement between the front and rear train seems perfect.
The pace picked up in the second round. The bike is always easy, with a very gradual and natural angle setting. There is no need to rush it to tip it over and everything is done without a feeling of "falling".
The laps follow one another and the speed increases…. confirming the excellence of the grip, whether on long, fast curves, or during changes of angle in the final pif-paf at the end of the straight line, pressing on the brakes.
At this rate, the first stop comes almost quickly. The tire is hot…. and retains its temperature for long minutes. Even after 10 minutes, when the next run has not yet started, the tire still seems to stick. So even after periods of non-stress, the tire stays warm, an important characteristic to contribute to confidence, even after a stop..
Change of bike … I’m leaving with the CBR 600 RR. The same confidence sets in quickly. Precision is still there from the next turn while ensuring stability on the enormous acceleration required in a straight line, before taking the brakes and throwing the bike into the turn. Here again, the setting on the angle is done in a soft and progressive way. The followers of brutality would undoubtedly like more liveliness, but the tire always seems to say … "come I take you" without surprise, nor untimely side reaction.
Even though the laps continued throughout the day, the tires having been changed, it was not possible to judge the endurance and the degradation of the tire. However, at the end of the last session, although the tire had definitely heated up, and noticeably "cooked", it had not pilled with large particles as it often happens on the circuit. On the contrary, the wear seemed to be uniform all around the tire, guaranteeing long life..
Conclusion
The Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa also seems to have succeeded in bringing to a road tire the capabilities of a track tire with the necessary grip, capable of delivering strong acceleration without losing grip, including and especially on the angle. The track was wet, without being really wet – in some places didn’t change the behavior of the tire…. and ultimately not even in the pilot’s mind. The wear appears even and suggests that the advertised superior longevity over the previous model is real. It remains to carry out the tests over time, the tire is now commercially available. Do not hesitate to share your experience and your opinions in the Repaire long-term tire test.
