Ride test
BMW is already testing the new sports boxer on public roads. And is on the move in popular holiday and motorcycle regions like the Stubai Valley. No wonder that the test drivers there go online for our attentive readers.
The new sports boxer, the BMW R 1200 S, seems to be about to be ready for series production. The two machines photographed by Reader K. are already working far beyond the prototype stage. Nothing appears to be improvised anymore, it is only marginally camouflaged with a few adhesive strips. And it turns out that the computer retouching that MOTORRAD published in issue 10/2005 was already very close to the new model.
The design doesn’t change radically. As with the old R 1100 S, the entire technology is covered with an elongated plastic body that only appears cautiously sporty. The tank-fairing combination was again quite bulky and wide. A trick with which the designers probably want to distract from the broad boxer. The bench is uncharacteristically strongly graded and gives the passenger a good overview on the one hand, and less contact with the driver than before on the other. With indicators and LED taillights integrated in the mirrors, current stylistic elements of sports machine construction are now also finding their way into BMW.
The drive unit already known from the GS, the ST and the RT, consisting of a four-valve boxer, six-speed gearbox and lightweight cardan with single-sided swing arm, is trimmed for performance in the sportiest of all boxer machines. Mighty thick manifolds, a two-in-one front silencer under the gearbox with an integrated catalytic converter and a rear silence reminiscent of the Ducati 999 under the rear are evidence of the fine work done in the exhaust system.
The approximately 120 hp engine is allowed to suck in through small openings on the side of the fairing. This promise to ram-air effect at high speeds. The BMW developers achieved the higher output compared to the R 1200 RT and ST (110 hp each) through revised cylinder heads and a moderately increased nominal speed. Compared to the old boxer generation, in addition to the increased displacement, a significantly increased compression and cylinder-selective knock control ensure an increase in performance of at least 20 percent. However, the new boxers require super plus fuel.
The chassis of the R. The design of the 1200 S differs little from the R 1200 ST. As with the sports tourer, steel tubes welded into a grid structure ensure that the seat, attachments and upper steering bearings are held securely. The swing arm and the A-link of the Paralever front wheel suspension are located directly in the load-bearing engine block. At least the test drivers from BMW were allowed to drive the S with Ohlins struts. Let’s hope that customers will also enjoy such fine spring elements. Since lightweight construction has been a topic again at BMW for some time, the R 1200 S is a good 20 kilograms lighter than the 1100 model. Less than 220 kilograms ?? without the probably optional ABS ?? The aim is to have a full tank, and so the sports boxer should join the lighter two-cylinder sports machines.
