Euro 3 classic: Ducati 1299 Panigale

Euro 3 classic: Ducati 1299 Panigale

The long-awaited

The Ducati 1299 Panigale should actually fall victim to the Euro4 standard, at least one thought. The big autumn fairs in Cologne and Milan have shown, however, that the super sports car will almost certainly also be at the start in the coming year.

The history of the Ducati 1299 Panigale actually starts with the 999 from Ducati. Designer Terblanche came up with it for 2003 as the successor to the blessed 916 series. And it didn’t really meet the taste of the Ducati community. The excited for the successor. Two headlights next to each other, two exhaust bags in the rear and a single swing arm were set as ingredients: That was what the 1098 published in 2007 had to show. She did, which is why the Ducatisti were reconciled again. Via 1198 and 1199 – from now on there was an under-engine exhaust – it went to the 1299. The saddles up even more displacement, sends fat 116 pistons back and forth. With the cubic centimeter plus it goes beyond any suitability for racing regulations, but the country road gambler doesn’t care. He’s more happy about the increased performance. 197 hp are an announcement.

The 1299 not only has power on board, but also a lot of modern electronics. They are characterized by e-gas, ABS, driving modes and various other ingredients. Together with the sister model Ducati 1299 Panigale S, it is the sporty spearhead in the Ducati range that can hardly be topped in terms of onomatopoeia. Anyone who wants to be heard on the go will find the ideal play partner in the 1299. That is almost too much of a good thing. With ECE-R41, the Euro 4 standard prescribes new noise limits. Among other things, Ducati has to go for the sporty figurehead. A direct successor has not yet been finally presented. However, Ducati revealed at INTERMOT in Cologne that the 1299 Panigale and its sister model Panigale S will be equipped with a new traction control and EVO wheelie control in the future. In 2017, only the sale takes place according to the specifications of the "expiring series". A loophole to circumvent the Euro 4 norm for the not yet sold copies.

Desmo fans’ wishes are clear

So the successor will almost certainly come. Ducati without a powerful, sporty flagship is simply unthinkable. The wishes of Desmo fans are clear: Please continue like this. And if at all possible, integrate the silencers nicely on or into the motorcycle. The exhaust solution as with the little 959 was not met with too much approval. But Ducati will fix it. The silencer derived from the winning Superbike World Championship bike, which is also used in the newly presented 1299 Superleggera, is conceivable.

Until then, scurry across the country road with the Ducati 1299 Panigale and enjoy the fat punch of the V2. Soak up the stability inherited from the 916 series while enjoying the most nimble handling of all red superbikes that have been approved to date.

Delay to the point, bend and fire out of the corners with a big punch. The Ducati 1299 Panigale can do that, still requires a leading hand – this is also typical for Ducati – but rewards it with a driving experience that only a sports bike from Bologna can offer. It should, it has to stay that way. We’ll soon know if that worked.
