The Beast 2.0

The Beast 2.0 – with the usual pithy words, KTM announces the revised version of the power-naked bike 1290 Super Duke R for the 2017 season. The power naked bike is currently being presented in Qatar. MOTORRAD editor Peter Mayer (on the photo in conversation with KTM test driver and ex-GP star Jeremy McWilliams) is on site.

The headlight, reminiscent of an insect’s eye, distinguishes the new one KTM 1290 Super Duke R already looks different from its predecessor. But the Austrians also refined their flagship power bike from a technical point of view. A look at the list of modifications gives an idea of the development goal: The Kraftmax should become even sportier. On the engine side, this is ensured by shorter inlet ducts, higher compression and an exhaust flap. The V2 should now produce 177 instead of the previous 173 hp. When it comes to the chassis, the technicians install a lower handlebar.

On top of that there is the full electronics package with shift assistant, multi-level traction and wheelie control, cornering ABS. In the “Track or Performance Pack” also tailored for the racetrack. At the Losail International Circuit, however, guests are only allowed to attend tomorrow. Today the KTM 1290 Super Duke R had to be extremely tame in Doha city traffic. First impression: The less cranked handlebars position the driver noticeably more front-heavy, which – on the circuit – will probably put more pressure on the front wheel. The running smoothness has not suffered from the increased compression. The so far cultivated, fat twin runs smoothly from 2500 rpm, starts powerfully and yet easily controllable.

But it won’t make its proper appearance on the race track until tomorrow. How the Kraftmax performs there and what else there is to know about the upgraded KTM 1290 Super Duke R can be found in MOTORRAD 1/2017 (at the kiosk from December 23, 2016).
