Driving report Buell Ulysses, model 2008

Lean level

Faces in the crowd, that’s what the Buell models should be, according to CEO Erik B.be ual. And they are too. The short wheelbase, the internal front disc brake, the toothed belt drive, the frame serving as a fuel tank and the oil supply stored in the swing arm characterize his works, as does the 1200 engine borrowed from Harley. These principles also apply to the Ulysses, the mixture of enduro and fun bike launched in 2006. But for the 2008 edition, the Americans worked hard on their reliable hybrid (see list). In order to pass the Euro 3 hurdle, however, the V2 had to give up. Of the 102 HP measured by MOTORRAD (issue 1/2007) of the predecessor, 96 are left after the cleanup. Whereby the American drive struggles with the mixture formation.

Generally when running cold and occasionally when warm, the two-cylinder chokes below 2000 rpm when the gas bursts. After that, the long-stroke engine picks up hard, but loses its vigor compared to the previous model from 4500 rpm. But the reinforced fork does a great job, banishing the often criticized warping of the fork legs when braking hard in the realm of the forgotten. Also pleasing: With the significantly larger steering angle, it can now be turned without maneuvering even on narrow country roads. The now standard heated grips act overzealous. Even at temperatures around freezing point, the first of the two levels already makes the palms of the hands glow. Apart from that: Even if Euro 3 demands a sacrifice from Ulysses, the American is fun. She inspires with lively handling, good straight-line stability, dresser seating position as well as with her strong character and yet cultivated Harley V2. And technically she remains the face in the crowd.
