We still can’t quite believe it: After decades, Ducati is saying goodbye to the superbike concept with V2 drive. For the big final act, the 1299 Panigale R Final Edition sits down with the first 1199 Panigale from 2012.

Our editor-in-chief must be crazy. Or at best innocent. For this special race track duel, he provides us with his beloved sweetheart, his private one D.ucati 1199 Panigale, available. He probably thinks we’d take them with kid gloves and carry them around the slopes instead of shooing them. Not even close! The superbike was created for shooting, so it is moved in a species-appropriate manner, that is! Just like the Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition (FE), which costs around 40,000 euros and which Ducati has equipped with the finest hardware and the latest software – attack!

Euro 5 is already looming in 2020

Beautiful is actually different. But we really like the solution of the Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition, with the individual tubes of your titanium system mounted halfway up on the left and right. Everything complies with Euro 4, everything is homologated. In addition, the hot World Cup bikes with this design are also chasing around the slopes. “The final edition is not limited. As long as there is demand, it will be built, ”explains the Ducati man. However, the high cost price limits the FE unit numbers at least indirectly. In addition, Euro 5 threatens in 2020. By then at the latest, the fat V2 should finally be history. But here and now we let the magnificent Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition off the leash. And with it the Ducati 1199 Panigale. As the first type of this series, it represents the first edition, so to speak.

In fact, the fine drive of the latest Superleggera works in the Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition. We remember: crankshafts weighed down by 700 grams and finely balanced with tungsten elements, titanium connecting rods and valves, camshafts with sharper control times and specially coated, full 116 pistons (V2 record) that are as short as the mini skirts of long-legged beauties in midsummer. The Panigale R only has to do without the fine sand-cast housing of the Superleggera. In addition, the two pistons oscillate in steel instead of aluminum liners. Ducati gives 209 horses for the V2 – we believe the Italians every single one of them. Especially since Bologna, unlike in the past, now only communicates rated outputs that are homologated and certified in the papers. But that’s just paperwork. A well-known football coach knew long ago that "on the pitch is crucial". And on the engine side, the Panigale R shines “on the pitch” without a doubt.

The 1199 bravely sets off over 8,000 turns

And the Ducati 1199 Panigale? It ushered in a completely new era in 2012. In favor of high peak performance (factory specification: 195 hp), Ducati designed the completely redesigned engine with a bore / stroke ratio of 112.0 x 60.8 millimeters to be significantly shorter than that of all its predecessors. The Italians named it Superquadro ("over-square"). The unit enables speeds of 11,500 rpm – an unprecedented value for a fat V2. In addition, timing chains now take over the camshaft drive. A real paradigm shift, because since the late seventies / early eighties toothed belts have been doing this job without exception.

The wind protection of the flat, small screen on the Ducati 1199 Panigale is modest.

Because of the short stroke, the Ducati 1199 Panigale is somewhat anemic in the lower and middle speed range. In direct comparison with the muscle-packed Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition, the smaller Pani lags even further. If there are a little more than 8,000 turns on the clock, but it starts bravely and marches steadily to the performance zenith of real 187 hp, which is available at 10,600 rpm. Because of her lower punch, the little one appears more gallant, gracious and does not pull the last reserves out of her pilot. In addition, her twin runs a little more cultivated. Overall, from today’s point of view, the unit is not a real steam hammer, but it does not overwhelm the pilot on the runway and is very pleasant to drive. And who knows, as the first in the series, it might even achieve cult status in a few years.

The Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition is the last of its kind to have this almost certainly today. With the fine tricolor paintwork in national colors, Ducati also pays tribute to it optically. So far, only a few bikes have enjoyed this pleasure. In addition, the 1299 R only has forged aluminum wheels painted in exciting red. This stylistic synthesis of the arts also makes the eyes of numerous race training participants glow, and the photo functions of their smartphones glow. A small extra bonus for the boys and girls from the organizer Speer Racing, who kindly reserved seats for us at short notice for this Hockenheim event.

Solid cojones not included in the package

For the first time, the latest Bosch hardware is used in the Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition to control the electronic driver assistance. Particularly noteworthy: Thanks to the new six-axis sensors, the traction control, according to Ducati, now allows controlled drift angles at corner exit. Unfortunately, the massive cojones required for this are not included in the package. In addition to the TC, the R naturally also offers other aids such as the multi-adjustable ABS with curve function, adjustable engine braking torque, the quickshifter with blipper function, wheelie control and three different, preset and individually programmable driving modes. The fork and shock absorber work without any electronics. Here Ducati uses the conventional Ohlins parts of the 1199 R from 2015.

The bubbling screen of the Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition protects the driver a world better.

The Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition hammers into the corners incredibly easy, corner sharpening at its finest! The noble Ducati owes its great handling mainly to the light wheels and the weight-optimized crank drive, keyword gyroscopic forces. Our editorial scales attested the Italian 191 kilos with a full tank. However, without mirrors and license plate holders, which the importer removed as requested for use on the racetrack. The total weight should be around 194 kilos, which is exactly the same as the 1299 S..

The Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition tends to be tightly tuned, especially in the fast Parabolica. A peculiarity that, due to the design, runs right through this series with very powerful motors. You can remedy this by opening the damping on the fork and shock absorber. However, there is only real calm when the pilot holds the handlebars relaxed, carefully stepping through the gears in an inclined position and slightly in the notches when accelerating. Too complicated? Definitely no, because firstly the phenomenon occurs mainly in parabolic steroids. And secondly, spinning with the Final Edition is definitely worth the extra effort!

The 2012 Ducati 1199 Panigale is far less complicated in this regard. It is true that she needs noticeably more effort to chase corners. But it hits the line just as precisely as the Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition and, thanks to its softer chassis, is much quieter – a real racetrack flatterer. Our boss is also pleased. Whether he is crazy or just innocent is still not entirely clear to us.

A direct price comparison between the Ducati Panigale 1199 and the Panigale 1299 R Final Edition is actually pointless. Of course, the Final Edition is much rarer and more expensive, but also more exclusive. In order to bridge the gap in the price range, we not only compare the 1199 Panigale and the 1299 Panigale R, but also all 1199 Panigale models. For potential "Ducatisti" Definitely worth a look: Used Ducati 1199 Panigale and 1299 Panigale R Final Edition in Germany
