Portuguese GP FP2 practice: Zarco leads the first day in Portimaõ !
The best time of the first day of MotoGP testing of the 2020 Portuguese GP goes to Frenchman Johann Zarco, author of a superb 1’39.417 never achieved on a motorcycle on the Portima circuit Port ! The future Ducati-Pramac rider precedes the Yamaha de Viñales and the Aprilia d’Espargaro. Report and classification.
Second practice session in Portimaõ still in the form of a discovery for the MotoGP riders, who had never driven on the impressive Portuguese track with their prototypes until. The sun and the mildness of the Algarve region allow them to familiarize themselves with this superb route with impressive height differences..

The first part of the session sees the first place being exchanged between Miguel Oliveira – leader this morning at home -, Stefan Brad or Maverick Viñales. Then the lap times fall in the last ten minutes with improvements under 1’40: Jack Miller, followed by Andrea Dovizioso and Johann Zarco notably cross this bar, revealing an advantageous ease of the Ducati.
The Cannes driver literally emerges from the second part of the standings to take the lead in 1’39.417, a time that will not be beaten despite the final attempts of his opponents. The n ° 5 is to date the fastest motorcycle rider of Portimaõ, with almost a second better than the record in force in WSBK (1’40.372 by Rea in 2019) !
The man to beat at Portimao! fastest for !

The French driver is ahead of Maverick Viñales, Aleix Espargaro, Fabio Quartararo and Brad Binder, i.e. a Ducati, two Yamaha, an Aprilia and a KTM in the Top 5! Recall that Espargaro is the only one to have experience of the circuit with his MotoGP: the Spaniard rode there with his RS-GP during the discovery tests in early October, in accordance with the regulatory advantages available to Aprilia..
Fall of Rossi, lack of landmarks in Portimaõ
The new world champion, Joan Mir, sets the sixth time three tenths behind the leader, after having released the big attack at the end of the session on his GSX-RR. The Mallorcan precedes Andrea Dovizioso who is eyeing third place in the final standings: the result is a bonus of one million dollars, according to some Italian colleagues !
A day to forget for The Doctor! has crashed at Turn 4!
– MotoGP (@MotoGP)
On the other hand, Valentino Rossi’s acclimatization to the difficult Portimaõ layout continues to pose major problems: distant 19th this morning, the Italian fell back to 21st place at 1.8 seconds after having fallen in turn 4 at the end of the session. Never in the rhythm today, the Doctor suffers from the comparison with the M1 Viñales and Quartararo who are at the forefront, while Morbidelli is 10th on his M1 2019…
- MotoGP 2021 grid:
This counterperfomance reminds us that the genius of the Alpine pastures is rarely to his advantage on the new tracks, unlike drivers like Casey Stoner, Marc Marquez or even Jack Miller who are fast from their first laps on a track they are discovering..
Two other drivers went to the mat this afternoon: Alex Rins on his Suzuki at the start of the session, then Takaaki Nakagami who bandaged his injured finger before ending the day in 12th place behind the surprising Stefan Bradl on the official Honda. Mika Kallio – who replaces Iker Lecuona positive for Covid-19 – is again the red lantern (orange, rather!) Of this test session.
The third MotoGP practice session will take place tomorrow Saturday from 10:55 am to 11:40 am (Paris time). Stay connected !
