The Fat Boy had gone through more than 20 years without asking too many questions, evolving with the cm3 surges of his Twin Cam. He started out slipping into a Fat Boy Special, he went through the CVO box, and now he wants to get into the bobber trend too. Less fat, more slenderness in the profile, grinding strokes in the mudguards, 16-inch spoke rims…. Thus was born the Fatboy Slim.

Since the second decade of the 21st century, Harley-Davidson has been thoroughly repackaging its post-war history. The Slim is another demonstration of this. At that time, bikers took all the superfluous out of their machine to keep only the essentials. Milwaukee tries to clean up this FLS the same way, with a solo seat, less chrome, a chopped rear fender, the front one cut in half, narrow tires and very airy rims (they are full on the Fat Boy). Thus stripped, the Slim loses ten kilos, gains darkness, plays on looks and cool. But for a bobber, I find it still packs too many accessories. We appreciate the “Hollywood” handlebars with reinforcement bar, the leather strap on the tank and the half-moon steps…. But these elements, as well as the cowling and the fork covers, do they have their place on a custom that wants to be refined? Unless he’s part of an unlikely new trend: the accessorized bobber. At all … that would be nonsense. The slim is not a pure bobber but a machine with a bobber look, nuance.

Under the huge fuel tank with a ‘cat eye’ console, the pulsations contained come from the heart of the bike: the big 1690cc twin, the Twin Cam 103B. This B informs about several characteristics of the engine. Mounted rigid in the “hardtail” frame, it is equipped with a balance wheel to reduce vibrations. Fat everywhere, it delivers more than 13 mkg of torque. This schizophrenic bullshit, Harley wants to show it more. Designer Casey Ketterhagen puts it this way: ‘It’s time to let the engine take its place. Therefore, we put the Softail on a diet to reduce its proportions. Lower the rear ladder with a narrow tire, and your eyes are automatically drawn to the center of the bike. “
So there, too bad! If the eye is drawn to the center of the Slim, why have the mechanics smeared with black? It’s not the engine that we see, it’s only its cylinder head covers and gearbox housings.

I see you twitching…. Because for you, the essential is not there but in the guttural outbursts of the American twin, in the solitary pleasure of living the road. Good thing: the Slim is an exclusive machine, which accepts only the rider, seated low to the ground (650 mm seat height).
