The Electra Glide Ultra Limited is the pinnacle of the Harley lineup, just ahead of CVOs. An expression of Grand Tourism wanting to overcome limits. And the Rushmore Project in 2014 offered an abundance of improvements. Four years of listening to customers, collecting comments and ideas, feedback, and in the end, a discreet leap forward on all fronts. The 1690 Electra Limited “generation 2” will seem little different to you, always so delicious, but its performances are of another ilk. What about ?
Well, it starts with a journey into the heart of the Twin Cam 103. You watch it, from near and far, and see no difference except its majesty. And yet, if you only knew what Harley put in … Fleet! Liquid cooling, hoses, radiators. Anything that could make the purists scream. But the builder has made every effort not to offend anyone. The twin-cylinder is still mostly air-cooled; only the cylinder heads are cooled by water.
Coolant is routed through the cylinder heads in the area surrounding the exhaust valves. As for the heat exchangers, they are remarkably well hidden in the bottom of the fairings. The compression ratio has been increased to 10.1: 1 instead of 9.6: 1 previously. The airbox delivers higher flow and an improved cam optimizes low-end torque. Everyone wins: less heat in traffic jams, 10.6% more power and a gain in torque of 10.7%. The Twin Cooled High Outout and its 1688 cm3 now take off 14 mkg of torque at 3750 rpm. An improvement of almost half a mkg compared to the previous Twin Cam 103. Far from the 10.7% announced, which let us hope for 15 mkg in all. Okay, these are just numbers. We all know where the gist of this engine is.
More anecdotal, the clutch springs are firmer, but the hydraulic clutch control allows an identical force to the lever.
A sprinkling of water in the engine, worse a blow of scalpel in the fairing. Harley also dares to modify its timeless “Batwing” fork crown. 3000 tests later, a central air intake is cut under the windshield, so as to equalize the air pressure and reduce the eddies around the pilot’s helmet. It opens and closes at the push of a button. Then, it’s a cocktail of practicality and style that subtly changes the peripherals of the Limited. The Tour Pak trunk, more compact, nevertheless offers 4% more capacity. The slimmer suitcases also provide more storage space. These luggage elements open with a single push. In addition, they are lockable with a One-Touch button, just like the fuel flap, the Jukebox and the glove boxes..
That’s all ? Not far from here. The Rushmore Project takes Harley to a new dimension of entertainment. The MP3 CD “motorcycle radio” gives way to a multimedia system worthy of an Audi. On the Electra Limited this is called the BOOM Box 6.5 GT and includes a 6.5 inch touchscreen, GPS with over 35 features, 25w per channel, voice recognition, Bluetooth; and with the Jukebox, you can connect your iPod, USB key or SD card. Your tastes combine with Harley styling to take you as far as the horizon.
Let’s stay within the framework of life on board to discover how comfort evolves. For the pilot, as we have seen, beautiful and complete instrumentation, heated grips and cruise control. It is on the passenger side that the gain is made. Saddle longer and wider by 2.5 cm, saddlebag guards lowered, backrest revised in height, width, angle and shape for better comfort, offset speakers and adjusted armrests. With that, it’s impossible not to please Madame.
The year of the change almost should have changed the name of this Touring from Limited to Unlimited. After optimizing engine, comfort and entertainment, Harley also looked at the chassis. Lighter and stiffer wheels, of course. A 49 mm fork, that is. Fine-tuned damping, OK. And to include braking, the Reflex system combined with ABS. To put it simply, the front and rear brakes operate independently below 40 km / h. Above, the linked braking is activated and an electronic management distributes the braking between the front and rear.
The lighting is also evolving, with a Daymaker LED headlight supported by halogen fog lights. Not content with offering more light, Daymaker technology visually brings a surprising modern touch. In all, these eyes distribute 2136 lumens to pierce black. Do these numbers mean nothing to you? Neither to me. The Ultra Limited 1690 “phase 2” also adopts controls with remote functions on the handlebars, a new front fender, new medallions, more visible instrumentation and a new harness for battery charging..
While retaining a maximum of style which is all the pride of the Electra, this anthem to the road now offers much more for a minimal inflation. Rise anyway almost transparent given the amount required to have the right to cruiser on such a liner. Sitting on the 103 High Output Electra Glide Ultra Limited Rushmore, you have no more excuses not to indulge yourself on thousands of km.
