Cruiser New Items 2011- Softail and Sportster
The Harley innovations 2011 presented in late summer 2010 were kept within narrow limits. Now there is another news lookup: two decent servings from the modular system.
If as a motorcycle manufacturer you have nothing really new to present when it comes to novelty, there are different ways to deal with it. You could keep a low profile, but that’s not really clever. It is better to come up with something unusual, as Harley-Davidson did recently. The Americans invited V-Twin-affine scribes to one "Custom event" to the USA to present Harley’s full range of accessories and modifications.
And by the way, they conjured up two more 2011 news items, the technical novelty value of which is within limits, but which fits the umbrella term "Customizing" fit; because with the Softail Blackline, the cheapest Softail model, and the S.portster 1200 Custom, the most expensive Sporty, Harley now has two very hot irons in the fire, which finally dispel the old prejudice that a standard Harley at best serves as a conversion base. These two hip flasks are ideal for a biker’s life, at least in the initial phase, without modification. They already bring with them a lot of what the friendly Harley customizer did in the past. In the case of the Softail Blackline, the fairly priced entry into the Softail world, this is, for example, the eponymous coloring: frame, swing arm, fender holder, dip tubes, fork bridges, headlights, valve covers, crankcases, covers for the primary drive and gearbox and even the rims – all Black.

Miracles happen: a standard Sportster without a bathroom furniture seating position.
Or maybe even a Sportster, because the name still says it all – at least by Harley standards. The Sportster 1200 Custom is no exception. In direct comparison with the Blackline, it is the significantly more agile Harley. The driver sits more comfortably and can have a lot more driving fun on winding country roads thanks to the slightly greater lean angle and more stable rear end.
The really big and lazy two-cylinder punch that the Blackline has to offer should not be expected from the Sportster. The 1200 twin climbs up out of the lower rev range just a little tired, and it can be stirred a little more often in the five-speed gearbox. But that probably doesn’t bother the target group, the name suffix is ultimately "Custom". There are plenty of them on the front, because the 16-inch model, which is placed in a wider fork, makes the essential difference to the Sporty sisters. An extra flat mounted front fender, a new headlight bracket and of course the one mounted on a curved riser "Pull back"-Handlebars complete the custom package.
The thing with the cuddier front wheel offers no technical advantages, at least in theory the opposite is true. In practice, however, the load can be turned cleanly and with only minimally increased effort and then bravely stays on track. In comparison, the blackline driver has to work and correct significantly more.
The US version driven by MOTORRAD rolls on cast wheels and puffs out of rather sloping pots. At least in the California-compliant version that sounds even sadder than in the European versions. The same applies to the Blackline, which leads to the realization that with all the customizing ex works, at least the exhaust dealers do not become unemployed.
