The Road King opens a new road with the Milwaukee Eight. To be enjoyed in a Standard or Classic version, in hard or soft suitcases, this Tourer combines travel with a certain simplicity and an engine full of promise. An ode to the road for lovers of this machine sweating deep America. It leaves it to the other models of the Touring range (Street Glide, Ultra Limited, Road Glide, Electra Glide, etc …) to use and abuse appendages to perfect the trip. More humble, wanting to be traditional at the limit of skinning, the machine lends itself perfectly to cruising, mane protected or hair in the wind; the choice can be made in an instant with the easily removable windshield.
Here, no Boom Box multimedia sound system, no GPS, no MP3, no Bluetooth, nothing that does not sweeten the trip. Everything is shared with the motorcycle, as before.
Tradition does not necessarily rhyme with stagnation. While the Road King has not fundamentally changed since its debut in 1995, the MoCo has steadily given it the upgrades that time and technology have sprinkled over production Harley. Today, this cruiser embeds the twin-cylinder Milwaukee Eight in its 107 ci version. A ninth generation block, much more striking than the Twin Cam it replaces. More displacement (1746 cm3 in total) but above all more technology. Two spark plugs and 4 valves per cylinder, greatly reduced vibrations at idle, much better breathing, more muscular acceleration and much more torque. Now the Road King has a muscle over 15 mkg. Almost the strength of the CVOs, which the pilot will never cease to appreciate at the asynchronous rhythm of the American bowls. To learn more about the Milwaukee Eight engine, click here ->
And equipment to enjoy as you go up the highways. Its triple gaze accommodates Daymaker LED headlights, spitting out 986 lumens (that corresponds to a 75-watt incandescent bulb). The rear damping, playing on a short range of 76 mm, returns the efforts directly to the back but the suspension relies on pneumatic assistance. The Brembo brakes are coupled by the REFLEX system and will know how to estimate the reinforcement of the ABS. We cannot ignore the H-D Smart immobilizer, cruise control, a 49mm fork, and … that inimitable style..
2017 brings the M8 engine as well as new suspensions. The shocks become emulsion elements, easier to adjust in preload and more stable over time. They are signed Showa, just like the 49mm fork with SDBV technology. It should offer more efficiency and linear damping. Then, the cruising, it is also appreciated with small details, like the long steps, the wide handlebars, a beautiful instrumentation anchored on the tank, a selection of chrome, a quality paint, sensations that only an American badged wing can assume.
Like any good Harley, you will have to contend with a substantial weight (371 kilos – twice the mass of a KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R), a generous wheelbase of 1625 mm, and a muscular entry ticket. Criteria quickly forgotten by brand enthusiasts.
