With its name slamming like a heavy rain over Los Angeles, the Blackline is made to appeal to rebels and lovers of the beautiful who flirt with the simple. Even if the machine does not lack elegance, we cannot say that it shines by its originality. Harley, however, claims without restraint that the Blackline is a custom inspired by the fundamentals of motorcycling, stripped down to the extreme, in the minimalist style of the post-war Bobbers…. In short, the same speech as for each new model says “authentic”. One would almost wonder the usefulness of this model as it approaches in spirit and in the aesthetics of the Street Bob. But here’s the trick: it’s not a Dyna, it’s a Softail. And there was no such sleek model in this range since the disappearance of the Night Train.
With its deceptively rigid frame, the Blackline thus sports an even more refined rear line, especially as the minimalist fender has gotten rid of the headlight altogether (the philosophy of the Sportster 1200 Nighster and 48). Extremely simple, this HD wants to focus on the essential: its engine. The Twin Cam 96 B, despite its deep black paintwork, makes no effort to be discreet, quite the contrary. Its polished-edged cylinder heads, its large chrome air filter cover, and its unmistakable beveled, torpedo-like ‘shotgun’ exhausts instantly condition the driver to the essentials: pure style and a big mouth.
As you might expect, the Blackline joins the Milwaukee Dark Customs family. As such, it sports touches of black paint in many places: frame, headlight, mudguards, cylinder head covers, engine cases, wheels, sleeves and triple trees, etc…. The chrome is all the more prominent.
To fully enjoy it, you do not have to get on this Softail but GET OFF. Extraordinarily low seat (660 mm), this custom offers the lowest seat in the manufacturer’s range; and say that the Sportster SuperLow had gone to great lengths to be as accessible as possible. Agility shouldn’t be a problem thanks to the slender 144mm rear tire. Then, more than living the road with the wind in your teeth, firmly attached to the SplitDrag handlebars, feet far forward and the bones finely shaken by the 1584 cm3 mounted on silent blocks in the ‘Hardtail’ style frame. Small regret, because a machine thus typed would deserve to live with a little more dryness and character in the lungs, by adopting the 96 without a balancing pendulum and rigidly fixed.
