Honda CBR 900 RR FIREBLADE 1996

For its 4 years of existence, the CBR 900 RR is experiencing its first major evolution. Admittedly, it had already evolved in 94 but it was more of a good facelift than a fundamental work. For 96, Honda overhauled it without questioning its philosophy. When you are the benchmark in your segment, you might as well remain so.

Stop looking her in the eye, that’s not where you’ll notice a difference. The fork crown has not changed. Everything else, yes, although it’s subtle enough that it seems new without really showing it. Come on, we’re nice, we’ll help you. Here is everything that has been changed: Fuel tank, seat backrest, fairing sides, swingarm, engine displacement, frame, suspensions. I’ll spare you the trinkets like the new turn signals otherwise, we’re still there next week. Instead, let’s focus on the essential points.
Like the Japanese 4-cylinder which is gaining ground. 1 small mm of extra bore and here it swells to 919 cc – 25 cc more which brings with them 4 hp and a small dose of torque. The block now comes out 128 hp digested by a reinforced clutch and gearbox. This excess displacement does not prevent the mill from being narrower than the previous one. It is, however, the same block, which Japanese engineers have brought up to date. New aluminum cylinder head gasket, lightened moving parts, new alternator reducing the width of the boiler by 9.5 mm, new ignition managed by microprocessor … Convinced ?
Honda CBR 900 RR FIREBLADE 1996Not yet ? So, let me tell you about the progress of the chassis. If the shape of the frame has changed little, its structure is however largely re-worked, its weight reduced and its rigidity increased. The reinforcement of the swing arm is stronger. The rear shock absorber offers more travel and extended adjustment possibilities. It is the same for the fork, lighter and improved in its hydraulic settings..
To know what that gives, there are not 36 solutions. We embark, and there, immediately, we realize that everything has changed…

… Before you even start. Seat height and handlebars raised, tank thinner, these small changes have completely changed the driving position. We gain in comfort, then, in standard use, in ease of driving. Welcoming the CBR? Much more. This new version plays a winner on both counts: performance is up and immediate comfort. Afterwards, it’s the pleasure of driving that takes over. The sporty Honda has raised the level of its services but not that of its requirements. No need to be called Doohan to feast. The machine is even easier than before, still very agile and moreover even more lively. 5 min to warm up, 2 to discover its stability, 30 sec to master its precision … After 10 min, you start to scrape the footrest lugs.

Honda CBR 900 RR FIREBLADE 1996We will cut them after. For now, we’re opening. With its more cm3, the CBR mill has gained smoothness, torque and performance. 4 more nags and 3 pounds less, that galvanizes a machine on all dynamic levels. The standard settings are very good for the road, almost decent on the track until the moment we start seriously. Adjust all that a little and you will gain frankly in traction and efficiency.
Performance – The CBR is steeped in it. It is only at the level of braking that it marks time against the competition. It is effective, but not as much as the 6 pistons that can be found in rival sports cars. A more frank attack would also have been welcome. Those with a good grip or who will press like the deaf may notice slight movements of the machine on heavy braking..

There is no mystery! The work done by Honda to advance the Fireblade is substantial and truly paying off. The bike is only better, whatever the end by which you take it. More efficient, more comfortable, intended to be a leading sportswoman on track and on the road (it excels more than any other), the new Honda 900 CBR can only be summed up in this way: a success.
