“What’s up with this Fireblade 98?” Here is what the neophyte could say who will not have noticed any details. It is true that at first glance, apart from the new colors, it is not easy to differentiate the CBR 98 from its predecessor.. Yet it is clear that she has changed. A new headlight optic, a significantly more generous fairing, a slightly re-worked rear … But that’s too little to really stand out. Most of the work of this evolution is under the dressing. For its new CBR 900 RR, Honda has remained faithful to its philosophy of “Total Control” while modifying the machine in depth..

The most demonstrative change is road behavior. The chassis has been revised, with a weight loss of 3 kg, a steering column advanced by 5 mm and an offset of tees reduced accordingly. As a result, the wheelbase does not change, nor has the weight distribution, caster or column angle changed. Where’s the thing then? Simple, the evolutions do not stop there! We have optimized the chassis and slightly modified the position of the pilot. The half-handlebars are 5 mm higher and 10 mm further apart. The footrests also rise by 5 mm. All of this allows the rider to be less forward, to have better leverage and thus improve the agility of the bike. Natural in the sequences, even more lively and easier to drive, the CBR marks a real progress compared to the old one. The fork is much more efficient and comfortable, digesting the small imperfections of the road and preserving the neutrality and the pleasantness of the chassis. The progress is even more glaring when it comes to brakes. By passing the diameter of the discs pass from 296 to 310 mm, the sports car offers a braking of a very good efficiency, biting and powerful; without however that its feeling is as fine as that of a certain GSX-R.
Efficient and user-friendly sportsman, it adds to its relative ease a comfort and a very appreciable protection on long journeys. You can ride at more than 180 without having to hunch over. Faced with the new R1, the CBR is much more pleasant to live with…

But less virulent in its mechanical arrangements. The engineers, however, have worked a lot on the mill but these are more improvements than real novelties. Clutch changed from 10 discs to 8, revised ignition, redesigned combustion chambers, new process for manufacturing liners, larger exhaust … which leads to a gain of 2 hp and a hint of torque. With 130 guns, the Honda has plenty to talk about but it’s hard to fight in the field of power against the Yamaha and the kawasaki and their 150 hp. Although its flexibility is a credit to it, both accelerations and times are relatively disappointing at low revs. You have to wait 4000 rpm to get the respondent. The ZX-9R is much more exciting on this point. The needle rises, reaches the mark of 7000 revs and the power is then really manifested. Without brutality or jolts but with force and regularity until the tachometer needle exceeds 5 digits.

Would the CBR get knocked down by its Japanese rivals so easily? In the game of pure power, of course. But the CBR is above all a sportswoman who accepts improvisation, remains reassuring in many cases without ever overwhelming its pilot. The recent R1 and ZX-9R are more sensational but require more experience, a serious composure and prove to be very demanding. When the owner of a CBR drives relaxed, the Kawasakists and Yamahists are constantly on the lookout. As for Fireblade fans, they will not be disappointed with this evolution. The CBR is improving on all fronts, remaining the pleasant and efficient road sport that we know.
