Is there a place for a big neo-retro roadster in our high-tech world? Oh yes, and more than ever. It will therefore be a real pleasure to see the CB 1100 on the road – a modern reinterpretation of the famous 1969 CB 750 Four. An old-fashioned motorcycle, in style as well as in technique. It gives off an authentic, nostalgic scent, which makes you want to indulge yourself. To believe that it was made in the 70s and that a dealer jealously kept it locked in a padded cellar to bring it out in Europe today. I specify in Europe because this CB 1100 already exists in Japan for several years. A half-novelty in short, but we appreciate it as it is.
The CB 1100 is pure vintage juice, with the quality and current methods. A real croc-en-leg to modern motorcycles, where jostle aluminum frame, abundant digital functions, horses galore and excited style.
The Honda plays elsewhere, on emotion, serenity, the desire for the beauty of the past. A nice round headlight, chrome mudguards, instrumentation with needle counters, a flat saddle, two side shocks, a beautiful tank without artifices or appendages – it’s an ode to the timeless.
On the technical level, the CB 1100 has enough to trigger violent disputes between lovers of vintage and fans of progress. The bike is built on the basics of the essentials, ignoring the overbidding that rages from streetfighter to hypersport. And we revel in it. With such a silhouette, it is impossible to imagine anything other than this: an ultra classic double-cradle steel frame, a non-inverted 41 mm diameter fork, a rocking arm could not be more basic, an exhaust that looks like an exhaust, narrow tires (110 and 140) on 18-inch rims, a 5-speed gearbox, and the heart of this bike: an air-cooled four-cylinder.
Ah yes, fins, clicking everywhere once you have switched off the ignition, a marvelous mechanism to watch. How many are left of these 4 legs refusing the multiple benefits of coolant? Apart from the Yamaha XJR 1300, you won’t find any multicylinder that smells like rock, hot, Pink Floyd, jeans and pill.
This engine looks full of charm, even though its specs are light years away from a modern block. 1140 cm3 of metal for less than 90 horsepower at the output … derisory. But we don’t mind the power. What interests us are its cooling fins, which are only 2 mm thick, the thinnest in the history of the Honda range. It is this retro aspect of the cylinder head, whose curves hug the camshafts and the central distribution chain. However, this mill is not an antique. It was given enough to pass the anti-pollution standards and optimized its cooling with an additional 335 mm oil cooler.
When the curves reveal stratospheric speeds to smack of excessive efficiency on the latest pugnacious roadsters, the engine of the CB 1100 will respond with a much greater availability in daily use: maximum power is obtained at 7,500 rpm, torque still earlier, at 5,000 rpm. Old-school saddle, raised handlebars, natural riding position bordering on relaxed, the CB 1100 will not encourage you to attack but to ride. Want to pick up the pace? Not sure that the machine wants to follow very long. The chassis is not that of a sports car, there are 250 kilos underneath, and that is not its philosophy. Rest assured, the level of safety is much higher than that of a machine from the 70s. Three brake discs are present with combined braking and ABS.
The CB 1100 is a beautiful motorcycle, vintage as we like and frankly welcome. With a little bit of the soul of the 750 Four, it will trigger waves of emotions. But this will come at a price: we are dealing with a Premium type product, and the price for this type of category is generally far from being the most accessible for a manufacturer. But what class !
