The CB 1100 EX is rigorously part of the current trend, with the seriousness and quality that we have a right to expect from a Honda. Claiming the offspring of the famous CB 750 Four, this roadster proves that you can still make beautiful air-cooled engines.. Its 4 cylinders with ultra-thin fins claim an adequate power to its claims, its chassis is safe, its finish above reproach and its exemplary docility.
But this Honda has one flaw that prevents it from achieving its success: it is a Honda; that is to say a machine thought (too), accomplished, without the grain of madness that makes crack those who seek the relief before wisdom.
And since it’s a Honda, she doesn’t give up. She took advantage of 2017 to significantly improve on a lot of small details. Partly to make it pass Euro4, and especially to give it more allure.
Evidenced by the redesigned tank, with more muscular sidewalls and visually weld-free lower edges. It may not seem like much and yet it establishes the presence of the bike while showing a real concern for the finish. The said tank has swapped its vintage cap for an aviation type element mounted on a hinge. The operation causes it to lose a little capacity, dropping from 17.5 liters to 16.8.
Let’s stay in the detail, will you. Because it is in this area that the CB 1100 EX evolves the most. The 18-inch rims go from 48 to 40 spokes and house more compact hubs, retaining the need to include inner tubes. The manufacturer refines the style with triangular aluminum side covers, a more rounded rear fender, a thinner passenger handle and LED lights. Note the plates supporting the footrests, more compact and full now (openwork on the old EX).
The instrumentation is obviously with needles. Two good circular dials as we like them. They are now adorned with chrome, with nearby turn signals raised by a few centimeters. The skilful eye will have distinguished that the chain guard is aluminum and more plastic. It will be harder to notice, except when standing, that the side stand is longer.
A slip of time flies on this Honda CB 1100 EX while the engine blows with ease. He didn’t need it, but it had to be touched up. Thus, the single intake body is shortened, the air filter revised and the exhausts retouched to meet the laws. And the Honda does not lose in the change. Its silencers are not only shorter but also lighter (2.4 kilos). In all, this EX “II” claims no less than 5 pounds lost. Not bad, but let’s not take out the prom shoes yet. All of metal and nostalgia, the CB 1100 EX is credited with 255 kgs on the scale. The 89 horses of the moulbif, which has not lost power, will not care.
The general equilibrium should not be adversely affected. Nor the driver for that matter, who will also appreciate providing less lever pressure thanks to the limited slip clutch. 16% less effort and better absorption of engine forces during strong downshifts. Driving will always be one of the silkiest points of this bike, refined by a new Showa fork and a new swingarm..
Bonus offered since 2017, a more distinctive, sportier, less wise version arrives in the catalog: the CB 1100 RS.
