Retro fashion continues to gain followers and new models, revisited versions of the glories of yesteryear or inspirations stuck in new machines. At Honda, vintage recently gave birth to the CB 1100 then the EX version (retouched this year). The look is perfect, the engine worthy of the brand, the quality evident. And to increase the dose of adrenaline, what could be better than a more athletic approach?!? That’s a job for this new RS version. A small extension that smells of light and muscular trips, with the sweet scent of carved trajectories and itchy footrests.
But be careful, not like sagoons. Like the Triumph Thruxton or the Norton 961 Commando, we are on a gentlemen’s motorcycle. No question of attacking while sliding and then sending the big ladle of gas to tear off pieces of the road. Here, we take care of the proportions, we leave the dynamite in the garage and we draw the arquebus. Style, gentlemen, and do honor to the CB 1100 RS which is not lacking.
From the outset, we are struck by the higher-end suspensions of this more vindictive version. At first glance, one could almost be fooled by this golden color and this presence. “Cool, Ohlins !!!”. Oops no. The Honda is equipped with Showa. Do not complain, because there is enough to ensure a good connection to the ground. The 43mm fork is equipped with a dual valve system to manage rebound and compression. The shock absorber duo has separate cylinders, adjustable in preload. To satisfy the sportier character of the RS, the suspensions are firmer than on the EX.
Let’s stay on the fork for a moment. Not really for the new cast aluminum top crown; more to see that the brakes are no longer in the retro spirit. On the menu, radial mounting and 4 pistons for Tokico calipers, biting larger discs, 310 mm in diameter. The classic CB 1100 was not open to criticism on this point, but the RS will make you want to play more. It will therefore be necessary to be able to calm down more seriously the 252 kilos of the machine; 3 less than the EX.
Play, yes, because Miss Honda has modified her chassis enough to become a jerk. Its more radical geometry is conceived with a shorter wheelbase of 5 mm, a retracted caster of 1 ° (27 ° -> 26 °), a shorter drag, a saddle raised by 5 mm and an advanced front sight of 7 mm. Small values, just enough to give a more lively taste to the whole. It is on the side of the wheels that the change is most noticeable. The narrow 18-inch spoke wheels gave way to 17-inch spoke rims. This allows sport tires to be fitted in larger dimensions. Suddenly, Honda had to modify the aluminum swingarm to accommodate the large 180 gommard..
No change on the engine side, except that it is entirely painted in black, except the side cases and the rocker covers, and that it is provided with the modifications undertaken by the EX to satisfy Euro4 (admission revised , lighter and shorter exhausts). 89 old-fashioned cooled horses are there to take the crew with velvety and conviction. The assisted clutch is also part of the game, reducing the effort at the lever by 16% and the evasions of the rear wheel during (strong) downshifts..
To confirm its style, the CB 1100 RS adopts more striking colors, with a Stripe pattern on the tank. The turn signals are much smaller and tapered, fitted with diodes. This light technology is also applied to the rear light and the headlight, which retains a retro shape as desired. The saddle has lost its flanges, but should also provide comfort..
Dynamism, bellicose for this RS version of the CB 1100. Be careful, this is not a cafe-racer, even if the spirit is close to it. With these two letters and these improvements, Honda’s retro roadster may have found its best variation here. Suddenly, we can slowly imagine a fork crown, a few bracelets, a 4-in-1, and we would end up with a retro-sport ready to unsolder the Nine-T Racer.
