2019 Honda CRF 450 R

Menus

The 450 CRF knows its potential and is committed to refining it. Torque and power values in the revs receive a serious boost while performance is improved across the full rev range. The pilot now has a three-mode start aid system directly inherited from the competition department. The 2019 part-cycle is characterized by modified suspension settings, a new adjustable Renthal handlebars as well as several evolutions aimed at saving weight.

2019 Honda CRF 450 RThe main lines:

The ability to be first off the grid and first on the timesheet has been a hallmark of the CRF 450 R over the past two years. For 2019, the level of performance increases further. Significantly higher horsepower and torque values were extracted from the engine through in-depth work carried out according to HRC guidelines on the cylinder head, intake and exhaust. All without compromising low-end traction capability..

A three-mode starting aid system directly inspired by that used by the HRC has been installed to help the rider – whether beginner or expert – to squirt off the grid at each start. A gear sensor engaged makes it possible to benefit from an ignition mapping specific to each gear while the PGM-FI injection supply has been optimized in order to inject twice per cycle. Oil pump capacity has been increased and some clutch components redesigned.

The aluminum double beam frame is largely unchanged but its construction has been modified in order to save weight, just like on the swingarm. A new front brake caliper also saves a few grams. Regarding the suspensions, new hydraulic adjustments and new spring settings have been applied to the Showa inverted fork of ø 49 mm in order to improve its reactivity. At the rear, the monoshock benefits from a ‘Super Finish’ treatment as well as revised ratios at the level of the Pro-Link variable reduction system..

Finally, an adjustable Renthal Fatbar handlebar is now part of the standard equipment.

In details :

Motorization

Although the general architecture of the 449cc Unicam 4-valve single-cylinder has remained largely unchanged since 2017 – apart from the removal of the kickstarter in 2018 – a host of new details allow the 2019 CRF 450 R to claim power figures of the increasing torque.

And although the gains are significant (+ 1.8 kW or 2.5 hp at 9,500 rpm and + 2 Nm at 7,500 rpm), they were not obtained at the cost of lower low speed performance. In the end, the power and torque curves come out significantly reinforced beyond 3000 rpm while the ability to stay at the edge of the red zone between two turns has also been improved..

The basic bore and stroke dimensions remain fixed at 96 x 62.1 mm with a compression ratio of 13.5 to 1. The shape of the combustion chamber squish zone has been revised, as has the skirt and the piston rings or the connecting rod. The outer casings have also been reworked in the direction of a better balance between weight and resistance..

A new air filter holder doubles the filtration surface area and therefore allows much more air to pass to the engine. The settings of the PGM-FI electronic fuel injection have been adapted accordingly and the system now injects twice per cycle. Also to respond to the increase in engine performance, a new radiator grille optimizes the air flow for greater efficiency..
Finally, a sensor installed on the gearbox allows the use of 3 specific ignition maps depending on the gear engaged (first and second, third and fourth, fifth).

The exhaust system is also evolving with, from now on, a difference in diameter between the tubes located between the main manifold and the silencers; the right tube thus has a diameter of 35 mm against 42 mm for the left tube
(ø 31.8 mm for the two tubes previously). At the same time, the total length of the exhaust line has been increased by 187 mm on the left side while the right silencer is 98 mm longer..

Despite this long list of developments, it’s not all about performance. Reliability has always been an important factor in the success of the CRF 450 R. Thus a new 5-nozzle oil nozzle replaces the previous 4-nozzle component to cool the piston while the oil pump which previously used a single nozzle. suction of ø 16 mm now uses 2 elements of ø 12 mm, synonymous with greater capacity.

Regarding the transmission, several elements of the clutch have been revised for more resistance while the 5-speed gearbox results in a final reduction of 13 x 49 whose crown has been redesigned for more lightness..

The ignition switch, the EMSB (Engine Mode Select Button) mapping selector, the injection warning light and the light diode are integrated in a small comodo placed to the left of the handlebars..

New for 2019, the launch control system allows the pilot to choose from three starting modes.
– 3/8 250 rpm mode, especially intended for beginners and / or muddy conditions
– 2 / 8,500 rpm mode, intended for proficient pilots and dry terrain
– 1/9500 rpm mode, intended for expert pilots and dry terrain

Activating the starting aid system is simple, as it suffices to actuate the clutch and press the starter button. A light diode will flash once to indicate that mode 1 is active. If the starter button is pushed a second time for 0.5 seconds or more, the diode will flash twice to indicate that mode 2 is engaged. Press again and the diode will indicate by 3 flashes that mode 3 has been chosen.

The Honda EMSB (Engine Mode Select Button) system is the system that allows the character of the engine to be adapted to the rider’s request. Static motorcycle and engine at idle, a simple press and hold on the dedicated switch for less than a second allows you to choose the next map in the sequence.

After a quick press, as in the case of “Launch Control”, reading the light diode placed on the control allows you to know the current mapping: a flash for mode 1, 2 flashes for mode 2…. If a new map is selected, the choice is also confirmed to the pilot three times.

Mode 1, the standard mode, selects the optimum combination to provide an efficient balance between power and torque. Mode 2 is smoother, with a more progressive feel of the throttle grip. Finally, mode 3 offers a more nervous behavior, with a more aggressive and more instantaneous power. In addition, modes 2 and 3 can also be modified thanks to the mapping adjustment system developed by the HRC.

Cycle part

The objective of the 7th generation of double beam aluminum frame developed for CRFs was clear: to optimize cornering efficiency, front axle stability and grip, rear axle guidance, all with a high level of feedback. sensations towards the pilot.

And if the developments of the 2019 vintage focus on engine power and its control, the chassis has not been forgotten with an even better general balance as well as increased agility and traction capacities. The operation of the suspensions has also been revised, at the front and at the rear..

900 g were gained on the total weight which is now displayed at 107.6 kg dry, or 112.3 kg in running order. Caster angle and drag are set at 27.4 ° / 116mm with a wheelbase of 1,482mm.

The aluminum double beam frame is now narrower and lighter, especially in the area of the swingarm mounting plates, which has also been modified to improve feel and grip but also to save weight..

The rigidity of the 2 cylinder head mounting plates (left and right) has been optimized while the structure of the footrests has been modified, from 6 to 4 reinforcements for a weight saving of around 20%.

Fully adjustable, Showa inverted fork ø 49mm spring loaded is simply a version of the Showa factory kit supplied to official Japanese MX Championship teams. For 2019, the spring setting, the hydraulic compression and rebound settings as well as the oil volume have been changed. At the rear, the fully adjustable Showa single shock receives a ‘Super Finish’ type treatment which improves its operation in travel. Finally, new ratios of the Pro-Link variable reduction system make it possible to significantly smooth the operation of the shock absorber when it approaches the compression stop..

The new Renthal Fatbar handlebars – with original foam – contributes to the reduction of the weight at the level of the steering while increasing the comfort of the rider thanks to its flexibility. The triple clamp is designed so that the handlebar brackets can be moved 26mm forward or back. When the brackets are rotated 180 °, the handlebars have an additional 10mm of latitude, bringing the number of riding positions available to the rider to 4.

As on the 2019 CRF 250 R, the front brake caliper is of a new type, lighter, with pistons of ø 27 and 30 mm against 2 x 27 mm in the past. This development, combined with the adoption of a new low expansion rate hose, improves braking feel and keeps power constant. This new caliper acts on a petal disc of ø 260 mm, supplemented at the rear by a disc of ø 240 mm with single piston caliper.

DID aluminum rims (1.60 x 21 at the front and 2.15 x 19 at the rear) now benefit from black anodization. Both are fitted with Dunlop GEOMAX MX3SF and MX3S compounds.

The 2019 CRF 450 R receives a 6.3 l titanium fuel tank whose shape, together with that of the trim elements, allows the rider to move easily on the machine while the narrowness of the front section and the shape of the mudguard directs the air more efficiently towards the radiator whose grille has been redesigned to facilitate the passage of the air flow.

The decoration of the casing is directly integrated into the plastic elements, which allows a high resistance to friction.
