Honda CBR 600 F 1988

It is not the one who announced the wind but it will certainly be the one who will make the most known this nascent category which are the 600 sport. These new machines which appear very slowly make it possible to bridge the gap between the 400 (very popular in Japan) and the sporty 750. Today only the Yamaha FZ 600, Kawasaki GPZ 600 R and this Honda CBR 600 are competing on the roads – a reduced offer which is just waiting to be expanded. These motorcycles are derived from the 400 models so popular in the land of the rising sun; and there are a lot of models in gestation which should soon land in France with 200 cm3 more.

But for the lover of beautiful mechanics, there will be only the technical sheet to rinse the eye. This CBR, like its big sister 1000, inaugurates a new kind of design, very enveloping, almost too modest, with a fairing which covers all the parts of the machine. Fluid, soft, light lines characterize this machine. Its elegance does not let you imagine how convincing its technical arguments are. In the 600 featherweight challenge, the CBR beats the FZ 600 by only 1 kg but pulverizes it in terms of power. At the same displacement, the 4-cylinder Honda spits 10 hp better or 85 nags – a truly impressive figure. However, this block, which claims a performance of 142 ch / L, does not call for extraordinary technologies. Just an optimization and an excellent use of recognized techniques to result in a compact, powerful engine, with 4 valves per cylinder, liquid cooling, huge 32mm carbs, big valves and a very polished intake. Extensive work on the shape of the ducts, the inclination of the mill (at 35 °), and the position of the carbs allow the gases to access the combustion chambers via a very direct route. But the generous dressing of the CBR does not show anything.
Nor does he discover the Diamond frame made of a steel structure. Strange; for a machine of this type, we expected the use of aluminum, especially since the 400 uses this material … Improvement of the Pro-link system for the rear suspension, TRAC anti-dive at the level of the fork, 17 “wheels in aluminum foundry, thinner brake discs and homogeneous weight distribution (50/50), the CBR 600 does not bring any spectacular innovation. But the right mix of all these ingredients results in a machine who is called the best.

We expected a small ball of nerves; we discover a motorcycle of astonishing ease. It only takes a few km to tame it … no, to know it as if we had always driven it. Impeccably installed, with onion controls and a reactivity of the chassis very faithful to the orders of the pilot, the machine welcomes you with kindness. What a pity that the engine is so discreet in its evolutions. A boiler, we like it when it lives, when it reacts with character, when it has rants. The Honda block, even if it is very flexible and lends itself readily to daily use, does not trigger passion. It is hollow in the low revs and releases its power with a lot of progressiveness. In this game, the Kawa GPZ-R’s mill, less powerful, is much more demonstrative. But the 4 paws of the CBR hide its game well. On the clock, the bike achieves a superb 11 “8 to cross the 400 m DA. For a 600, it is more than bluffing. Nearly 220 km / h in peak and times at the top of the category – this bike is not impressive but proves devilishly efficient. To fully exploit these canassons, the 6-speed gearbox offers excellent handling and precision. playing the selector, twirling by swinging this featherweight from one angle to another, the pleasure of piloting quickly sets in and the CBR pilot quickly adopts a smile. without being as lively as an FZ or GPZ-R, but extremely precise and particularly stable, the CBR can boast of a very rigorous road behavior. The suspensions are efficient, sound and does not call for any reproach; or only 2 small disappointments: the rear shock absorber lacks This adjustment and the fork requires some monitoring of its air pressure, under penalty of steering under certain conditions. The only really annoying point comes from the disagreement between the front brake and the anti-dive. The discs are powerful, biting and resistant, but the “TRAC” does not support this work and the front can start to wiggle under heavy braking. Too bad !

Braking that cannot be exploited enough and an engine that is too smooth, these are the only flaws in the new Honda 600 CBR. For everything else, this little sports car deserves praise: pleasant in the city, easy, manoeuvrable, efficient (it rivals the 750), discreet but elegant, preserving comfort and protection (for a sportswoman), the CBR will be certainly a name. When choosing, she will seduce you more by her efficiency than by her temperament.
