Honda NC 30 – VFR 400 R 1993

No need to hope to resist – once you meet her gaze, you will never cease to be captivated by this sportswoman of a different kind. A pure sport motorcycle, of course, but much more. And yet, for whom? A 400 is good for Japan. What would she come to do with us, where we cannot enter her in any championship? ? The answer is simple: the VFR 400 R did not come to win races but to win the hearts of lovers of beautiful machines and beautiful mechanics. A record ? His big sister RC 30 has already taken care of it. She, only came to make the throbbing bang a little harder.

War paints are for everyone’s appreciation. For the rest, it oscillates between the magnificent and the “Ouhaouhhh!”. In addition to the flawless build quality, the VFR 400 R provides little respite from a copious and suggestive list of equipment and specifics. Do you think you have a small RC 30 in front of you? The silhouette, the diamond-like aluminum frame, the single-sided arm and the V4 inscription never cease to fuel doubts. What a pleasure to contemplate this rim in all its splendor, revealed by the characteristic single-arm and stripped of its exhaust installed on the left (its distant cousin 750 VFR is not entitled to so much lightness). Radial tires, double 296 mm disc with 4-piston calipers, all-stainless steel exhaust … These very sporty attributes only underline the spirit which perspires of the NC 30 (its code name). Even her heart is inspired by the growl of one of the best racers in Superbike (the RC). A 399cc V4 lives in the bowels of the VFR and, once awakened, if its song is higher than that of the 750, its beats remain characteristic of the architecture of VFR-R.

Struggling with blood, it nevertheless immediately puts forward the Honda philosophy when you get on it: controls ideally placed, very quickly put at ease; with the added bonus of a sport driving position but less radical than that of the RC 30. A few kilometers of secondary roads quickly highlight the qualities of the chassis and the engine. The latter is also surprising for a 400. Of course, it does not have a monstrous torque, but it is very usable and responds to the right hand even under 8000 rpm, the area where it is really revealed. It does not take long to get there – once past this point, you get a good thrust, until the needle reaches maximum power. At 12,500 rpm, the V4 outputs 60 hp and it can still climb the towers. However, we do not try to hit the needle in the red zone and the reports are linked before. In the chapter “aggressiveness in the towers”, a Kawa ZXR 400 is more convincing.
Unperturbed on the road, the VFR 400 R quickly invites you to go to the circuit. We feel that it is there that we will really get our feet wet. Didn’t you whisper it enough, with its minimalist protection, reduced comfort, the firmness of its suspensions and its first gear as long as a freight train?…
If we really have fun on the road, we have unlimited fun driving the VFR 400 R on the circuit. Light as anything (- 200 kg all full) and with formidable precision, the machine is as impressive as it is enjoyable to take between the vibrators. Whatever the trajectory, it remains welded and perfectly guided. A tool that can be controlled with the finger and the eye and gives pride of place to piloting. As for the quality of braking, it is in tune with all the performance of the machine. Perfect the painting? Almost. The selection of gearbox ratios lacks precision. Too bad, and weird for a Honda. Can’t you see a kidney in the mirrors?!? And then you use it on the track ?

Let’s not beat around the bush. The Honda VFR 400 R is quite simply a machine to make the pilot dream. Of course, it is very expensive for a 400; and in addition, its distribution will be limited. Of course, its displacement is confusing and its positioning ambiguous. And yet, we can only be ecstatic in front of it, and be conquered by the exhilaration of its piloting. Get on his handlebars before thinking – In a dream, the numbers do not speak…
