Honda CBR 600 F 1991

4 years ago, Honda presented us with a small sports car that would quickly become a benchmark in its field. Better, it would be tempting to say that it is through the CBR 600 that the category of 600 sports attracted the fervor of the public..
4 years old is also the age of adolescence for CBR. This period when the body changes, the spirit and the ardor are freed, when we look with a bad eye on our rivals, especially when they have long and sharp teeth..

Yes, for 1991 the CBR changes. And not just a little. The difference between the generations is obvious. The soft and chubby lines of the 1st version give way to a dynamic, almost aggressive silhouette, highlighted by very fun colors and this class that characterizes it. It still bears the initials CBR but we are indeed in the presence of a brand new motorcycle. Frame, aesthetics, engine, power, everything has changed. The finish is good, without being free from any reproach, and some details denote a little bit, such as the simplistic passenger handle, the sadly black pot (an aluminum look would suit him better) or the swingarm leche-wheel-false-reinforcement – it flirts between neighborhood tuning and the patch. With its air of Sainte-Nitouche, the sportswoman pleases and promises to be benevolent for everyone: double crutch, efficient rear view, mounting bar under the passenger seat, natural driving position. The pilot is well installed but much more on the front compared to the old 600.
The most confusing about the handling of the CBR is precisely that it is not confusing. Easy, obvious, manageable, we do not discover it, we find it. On the first lap, it’s like you’ve been driving it forever. But by taking a look at the counters, you will see that it is quite different.

All needles to the right! The machine spins at full speed and leaves no chance for its ancestor to come and tease it. The figures are ruthless: at 234 km / h, the CBR version 91 runs 9 km / h faster and shoots down the 400 m DA with 3 tenths of advance. When I told you that she had changed this machine…
It started with a new engine which today reaches the famous 100 hp mark. It is the first 600 to reach this level of performance; good game ! The block, more compact, sees its distribution chain migrated to the right, its dimensions become even more super-square, its cylinder head, its moving parts and its admission evolve frankly. Charged with 34 mm (+ 2 mm) carbs, the intake ducts become straight as on the Stinger and Yam with “Genesis” technology. With a reduced stroke, an increased compression ratio, new valves positioned differently, pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft lightened, the 4-cylinder now takes 13,000 rpm (1,000 better) and transmits its watts via a clutch that passes from 6 to 9 discs while reducing its dimensions.
Always flexible, linear and rather well filled for a mill of this displacement, the boiler gives watts from 4,000 revs up to 8,000. We then play with a voluntary motor, which only reveals its potential beyond 2 / 3 thirds of the tachometer. Once in high revs, the 600 packs its pistons and gives you a firm and constant thrust to the edge of the red zone.HONDA CBR 600 F It almost feels like riding a 750. Do you think I’m exaggerating? At 400 m DA, a Suzuki GSX-R (French version) does not do better.

Hey, it’s not all straight lines on the road. And to show itself the best of the bunch (the FZR 600 is more than formidable now), the Honda also changes its entire chassis. A new 41mm diameter fork (the old one was 37mm) and a new aluminum swingarm accommodate generous rims that can be fitted with 120 and 160 tires. The Prolink-type single-shock absorber is attached almost to the horizontal. The frame remains a Diamond type with interrupted cradle and made of steel. Note that the CBR has grown by a small kilo in its mutation. It is now 4 kilos heavier than the FZR, the featherweight of the category.
Very stable, the machine has a more than remarkable road behavior, knowing how to combine dynamics, precision, rigor with an astonishing efficiency. On the bending roads all the time where it is rare that we exceed the first 3 gears, the CBR is fascinating of agility, plays with difficulties, pushes back the delicate situations and, icing on the cake, does not require to be gifted like Kocinski to take advantage of his qualities.

Its braking offers power, endurance, very good feeling; Too bad the jaws lack a bit of bite when they kiss the records.
A machine so obvious and so effective that many sportswomen will have to whip to follow it. In the 600s, only the FZR does a little better because of its even greater agility; the Yam achieves this performance at the expense of comfort and versatility. The driving position, the suspensions, the general approval are more sporty.
Speaking of comfort … If, on the CBR, that of suspension has progressed, the good road skills of the sport still do not have the right to a protection worthy of the name. At high speed, this is too limited.

Undoubtedly like the VFR, the new CBR 600 achieves a rare level of versatility and efficiency. Start and choose your destination: mountain, city, circuit, trip, arsouille, roll, walk, it is good for everything … and it has fun there as much as you.
