For its 2021 vintage, the Honda CRF
450 R benefits from a long list of improvements. To begin with, 2kg have
been gained on the frame and the rear loop. Then a work was carried out
on the agreement between the rigidity of the frame and that of the swingarm, on a
new geometry -more reactive-, on the ground clearance -increased- and on the
changes to the suspensions, the whole aiming to make
the bike more efficient in turns. Tim’s winning season returns
Gajser were also used to intervene on various points in order
to limit pilot fatigue and thus allow professionals as well as
amateurs of all levels to improve their performance over the laps.
The engine also benefited from
the experience of the HRC which focused on low and medium torque values
diets. At the same time, the decompressor has been moved, the volume of the
increased air and redesigned injection body, as well as the ducts
exhaust. The manifold is also new while a silencer
single replaces the dual system previously used. Finally, a clutch with
hydraulic control makes it possible to obtain more smoothness at the lever and to reduce
pilot fatigue.
The weight hunt is concentrated
on the fuel pump (more compact) as well as on the cylinder head cover
magnesium while newer, lighter and
thinner, make it easier for the pilot to move around. The saddle is also more
small and lower in its rear part.

The 7th generation aluminum double beam frame
which equips the big CRF had already been thoroughly reviewed in 2019. Under
the impetus of the HRC, the 2021 vintage is widely revised to further improve
its cornering performance.
Thanks to narrower beams, this
new aluminum frame claims a total weight of 8.4kg, down from
700gr, while the new rear loop drops 320gr to
910gr. The dynamic characteristics have also been reworked:
if the torsional stiffness is unchanged, the lateral stiffness has been reduced
by 20% in order to increase the speed of passage in bends, the traction
and ease of tacking. The distribution of the rigidity zones of the swing arm
made of aluminum has been adapted accordingly, with, in particular, more
narrow and less wide than the anchor point to the frame. the
Pro-Link system gear ratio has also been changed.
At the front, the lower yokes and
higher are more flexible, always in the sense of a greater
responsiveness of management and better feedback.
Fully adjustable, the fork
inverted Showa ø 49mm with springs is quite simply a version equipped
of the Showa factory kit supplied to the official MX Championship teams
Japanese. To improve the smoothness of cornering operation, the
valves have been changed, the travel increased by 5mm (310mm) and
the rigidity of the reinforced axle supports. The valves of the main piston
of the rear shock absorber are larger for more responsiveness and
better shock absorption while the spring uses steel the
lighter currently available, which saves 200gr on this
single element.
The saddle is now shorter,
lighter and lower by 10mm in its rear part so as to
facilitate the pilot’s movements. It is also much easier to
remove and replace. Incidentally, the interview is generally
easier since the number of screws required to fix the elements
of trim changes from 6 to 4 on each side.
More generally, the motorcycle is more
70mm narrow at the side plates (50 left side and
20mm on the right, exhaust side), the plastics are thinner while
that the tank cover has been removed.
The hunting angle and the drag are
fixed at 27.1 ° / 114mm (against 27.4 and 116mm previously) then
that the wheelbase is 1481mm (- 1mm compared to 2020).
Ground clearance gains 8mm to 336mm while the lower crown
peaks at 928mm, up 6.1mm. The angle described by
the tilt of the swing arm gains 0.9 ° to 14.5 °, the distance between the axis of
swing arm and the front wheel axle gaining its side 1.8mm for
reach 914.6mm. The dry weight is 105.8kg, i.e. 2kg of
less than the previous model.
Installed as standard, the Renthal handlebars
Fatbar contributes to driving comfort thanks to its flexibility. The tee of
upper fork is designed to allow movement of the brackets
26mm front or rear handlebars. When the supports are
rotated by 180 °, the handlebars have an additional 10mm of latitude,
which brings to 4 the number of positions available for the pilot.
Considering, – as the saying goes
Japanese-, that with enough dust we can make a mountain, the
various control cables have undergone a lightening cure which has made it possible to
gain 100gr on the total weight.
In terms of braking, the caliper of the
front brake uses two pistons of ø 27 and 30mm, associated with a hose with
low rate of expansion which improves braking sensations and
to keep the power constant. This caliper acts on a disc
petal of ø 260mm. At the rear, the ø 240mm disc is slowed down
by a single piston caliper.
DID aluminum rims (1.60 x 21 to
front and 2.15 x 19 rear) are black anodized, the unit
rear is also lighter and more resistant than the part it is
replaces. Both are fitted with DunlopMX33F / MX33 tires.

Refined motorization
The increase in power and
torque recorded in 2019 on the 4-valve Unicam cylinder
449cm3 was significant (+ 1.8kW at 9500
rpm and + 2 Nm at 7500 rpm). In 2020, the efforts of engine manufacturers will
are focused on refining and optimizing the feeding system
by electronic injection as well as the adoption of two devices, one
starting aid from the HRC and the other from torque control (HSTC).
For the 2021 vintage, taking advantage of
from the experience gained on Tim Gajser’s factory motorcycle, efforts have
focused on weight gain and optimizing behavior at low and
medium revs, in particular to improve cornering performance.
This work is concretized by a
significant increase in power (+ 0.6kW) below 5000 rpm,
accompanied by a resurgence of the feeling of low-end torque, a
characteristic that we owe in particular to the increased volume of the box
with air which goes from 1.8 to 4.1l on the “clean” side. This new
air filter housing – now accessible by removing a single screw-
feeds a lightweight 46mm injection body that optimizes efficiency
intake by further exploiting the volume of mixture remaining in the
intake ducts.
The angle of the injector changes from 30 ° to
60 °, spraying fuel directly above the throttle for a more
efficient, better cooling of the gas feed and better
sensations when opening the throttle The decompression system is also
new, with a centrifugal system that goes from the right to the left of
the camshaft for more stable operation at low speeds.
The biggest change affecting the
engine is to be found on the side of the 2 exhaust ducts which, as on the
latest generation of CBR1000RR-R Fireblade, adopt an oval shape rather
than round, for the benefit of efficiency. The 2-in-1 type exhaust system
in 2 of the previous vintage has also been replaced by a set to
unique silencer which conditions a weight gain of 1.24kg (from 5.08 to
3.84kg). The single collector is now closer to the axis
longitudinal of some 74mm, improving ergonomics. Finally, the
stamped silencer has 2 resonators, limiting noise while
promoting potency.
Another technology extrapolated from
World Champion motorcycle, hydraulically operated clutch. This legacy
improves both control – since the guard remains constant regardless of
are the conditions of use – and the sensations at the lever which are
improved with 10% less effort. The capacity of this clutch is
27% higher thanks to the adoption of an additional disk (from 7 to
8) but also a friction spring to enhance longevity and
the efficiency of power transmission. In the end, the skating was
reduced by 85% in the area of maximum power.
Bore and stroke dimensions
therefore remain fixed at 96 x 62.1mm with a compression ratio of 13.5 to
1. Adopting a sensor on the box selection
Specifications allow the use of 3 specific ignition maps
depending on the gear engaged (first and second, third and fourth,
fifth).
Reliability has always been a
important factor in the success of the CRF 450 R. Thus an oil nozzle with 5
nozzles replaced in 2019 the previous component with 4 nozzles for cooling
the piston while the oil pump which previously used a single nozzle
ø 16mm suction tube now uses 2 ø 12mm elements,
synonymous with greater capacity.
In order to earn a few more
grams, the magnesium cylinder head cover is thinner while the
gasoline is more compact and fixed by 4 screws instead of 6, allowing
save additional 120gr while guaranteeing the same pressure
feed and the same filtration quality as the previous component.

electronics
Adopted from
2020, the HSTC remains unchanged for 2021. This control system
torque acts to minimize loss of rear wheel grip
(synonymous with loss of time) by optimizing grip and traction. Without
use a speed sensor on the wheel, this system makes it possible to keep
full sensitivity to the throttle while managing power. His
efficiency comes from a precise intervention on the ignition timing and on
injection when abnormal speed variations are detected.
The three modes available
intervene on the piloting according to the following conditions:
– About Fashion
1, the system intervenes only very slightly and after a certain delay, this
which is ideal for limiting wheel slip and maintaining control
in tight bends.
– Mode 3
is the one on which the system intervenes the fastest and the most
strongly. This mode is particularly useful in mud or when the
ground is very hard or very slippery.
– Finally, the
Mode 2 naturally offers an intermediary between Modes 1 and 3 in terms of
speed and force of intervention.
The CRF 450 R 2021 benefits from a
notable improvement in terms of handlebar control. The aid witness
start, the injection feed operating light, the
Piloting mode selector and the light diode are placed to the left of the
handlebars, now associated with the control of the HSTC system.
Keep the HSTC button pressed
for 0.5 seconds allows the system to switch from one mode to another under the
control of an indicator light (green diode): one flash for the mode
1, two flashes for mode 2 and three flashes for mode 3.
The HSTC system can also be
totally disabled. Note that when the engine is restarted, the
system automatically returns to the last selected mode.
For its part, the aid system
initially “Launch Control” developed by the HRC allows pilots to
choose from three starting modes:
– Mode 3 /
8250 rpm, more particularly intended for beginners and / or
muddy conditions
– Mode 2 /
8,500 rpm, intended for proficient pilots and dry terrain
– Mode 1 /
9500 rpm, intended for expert pilots and dry terrain
Activation of the “Launch
Control “is simple since it suffices to actuate the clutch and press
on the starter button. A purple light diode will flash once
to signal that Mode 1 is active. If you push the starter button
a second time for 0.5 seconds or more, the diode will flash 2 times for
signal that Mode 2 is engaged. Press again and the diode will indicate
that Mode 3 has been chosen.
Finally, the map selector
EMSB (Engine Mode Select Button) allows intervention on the characteristics
of the motor. 3 maps are available to meet the pilot’s preferences
and under driving conditions: Mode 1 (Standard), Mode 2 (Soft) and Mode 3
(Aggressive). A blue light diode informs the pilot on the mode
selected. Note that the “Soft” and
“Aggressive” have been optimized to allow adjustments
additional (more smoothness or more explosiveness) via the
HRC setting.
