More than 124,000 spectators celebrated the IDM Superbike 1000 on the weekend (20/21 July) as part of the ADAC Truck Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. Germany’s highest class in motorcycle road racing returned the favor with unique battles for positions in both races and a new leader in the overall standings.

Explosive duel between Mikhalchik and Puffe

In the first race, drivers from three different brands stood on the podium: BMW, Kawasaki, Yamaha. Ilya Mikhalchik and pole setter Julian Puffe (both alpha Racing-Van Zon-BMW) took the lead. The 23-year-old Schleizer initially took over the management work. When his front wheel collapsed slightly in the short connection to the Nurburgring, the IDM defending champion from Ukraine pulled past Puffe.

The explosive duel – Mikhalchik and Puffe were separated by a single point in the overall standings before the race – ended prematurely on lap 16. Mikhalchik rolled out: technical defect on the S 1000 RR. He had to watch as Puffe won, took the championship lead and gained a 24-point lead.

Erwan Nigon (Kawasaki Weber-Motos Racing) drove a lonely race behind it, had a large gap to the front and a lot of space to the rear. It was the fourth podium success for the Greens this year. Third place went to Marc Moser (MGM Racing Performance, Yamaha). The 25-year-old had announced podium places at the start of the season, but has so far been unlucky. The fact that third place simultaneously put him in the top ten of the IDM Superbike 1000 felt like a liberation for him. Moser was in the most exciting fight of the run, in which Alex Polita (Holzhauer Racing Promotion, Honda), Jan Mohr (BCC Racing Team, BMW) and Toni Finsterbusch (Suzuki Mayer) also had a hard time. There was no lap without a change of position.

In the Sunday race, Mikhalchik in front of Puffe

Ilya Mikhalchik hit back in the Sunday race. He won ahead of his teammate Julian Puffe. The Ukrainian shortened the gap to the German to 19 points. The 22-year-old was celebrated by his opponents and fans in the run-out round. Mikhalchik danced the Hopak, a Ukrainian folk dance. The third man on the podium was no stranger to Erwan Nigon. The Frenchman thus defended his third place in the table.

Alessandro Polita (HRP Honda) finished fourth. In fifth position, Marc Moser saw the black and white checkered flag. The Yamaha rider had to start a race to catch up. At the beginning of the race two drivers fell in front of him, Moser had to swerve in a wide arc, which threw him back to third from last position.

All concerns have disappeared

The appearance of the IDM Superbike 1000 was one of the highlights of the 34th International ADAC Truck Grand Prix. Motor Presse Stuttgart as the IDM organizer and the Truck GP organization celebrated a successful premiere. “Everything went smoothly. The route was always excellently prepared for our drivers with great effort. All concerns that were expressed in advance with regard to the driving on the ring by the racing trucks have been dispelled. The Superbikers have spoken out in favor of a repeat of the cooperation, if the possibility exists, ”says IDM series manager Normann Broy.

Already on the next weekend (July 26th to 28th, 2019) the IDM will be a guest at the Schleizer Dreieck, then again with all grade classes and three cups in the supporting program.
