Crossing the United States is a mixture of dream and legend, an initiation rite for some, an ultimate adventure for others. You still have to do it with the appropriate machine, one that sweats the road from one end of the chassis to the other. For its rebirth under the bosom of Polaris, Indian has equipped itself with a machine capable of shading the tenors of the genre, Victory Cross Country, Honda F6B, Harley Street Glide or Kawa 1700 Voyager Custom. A majestic machine, where personality and mechanics inspire respect, curiosity and paroxysmal presence: the Chieftain.
The first tourer in Indian history, the 1800 Chieftain catches the eye like the miles. Its large and mossy fork head is not yet another copy of the “Harley pig nose” but has its own identity. Another nod to the past with a marked reference to the Streamliner style of trains from the end of the 30s. Extensive protection, a large illuminated porthole accompanied by a pair of acolytes, large LED indicators; what a headdress! In addition, the windshield is electrically adjustable, with a travel of 12 centimeters. A lot of chrome on top and here you are seduced.
Not yet ? However, the Indian 111 ci Chieftain has something to coax you. Its rigid suitcases are electrically closed and mounted on quick-release anchors. The saddle is in leather, the start is done without a key, the shock absorber benefits from a pneumatic adjustment, and the equipment continues with attention worthy of the best road: ABS, cruise control, quality audio system coupled with a Bluetooth connection, tire pressure indicator, 12V socket, etc….
The Chieftain also inaugurates a very rich dashboard with an elegant design. A battery of indicators shares the display with two dials with needles as well as a digital window as informative as those of German cars.
New and passionately Indian, the Chieftain is based on the same chassis-engine combination as the Chief Classic and Vintage. Either a cast aluminum frame with integrated air box, braking with 300 mm discs and 4-piston front calipers (2 at the rear), a 46 mm fork and a pneumatic mono-shock absorber.
True heart of beef, the Chief’s engine is named “modestly” Thunder Stroke 111. Superb, metallic ode mixing modernism and nostalgia, this twin of 1811 cm3 grows with 14 mkg of muscle and rind. More than an engine, this is one of the elements that makes you fall in love with an Indian. Like, more anecdotally, the Native American headdress on the mudguard, the ample skirts on the wheels, or this large Indian head logo running on each side of the tank.
An exceptional bagger or a Tourer with prestigious accents, the Indian Chieftain almost hesitates between the two and its price confirms its premium orientation. At more than 26,000 euros, it is much more expensive than a competing Harley, much more than the neighbor Victory, and much more than some Japanese productions. But the Indian gives off something, a thrill that belongs only to her.
