Once taken over by the Polaris group, Indian was offered a very nice rebirth, with high-ranking machines, with premium + positioning and elitist prices. Now that the reputation is anchored, it is time to think about widening the ground of conquest.. Indian now wants to make volume and reach more audiences. For that, no secret, must offer an entry-level machine at an affordable price. Indian’s recipe? Take a Scout, lower it in displacement, cut the price, make some adjustments to the level of the gear on offer, and here is the Scout Sixty. Less cc, less watts, less euros but no less Indian. And to expand its customer base even further, the Scout Sixty has been bridged in 35 Kw for the A2 license since 2017. This year also brought its share of fixes with new shock absorbers, better integration of the wiring, redesigned exhausts to improve the driving position, best at the level of the steering lock, and a cover on each side of the swingarm axis.
Without transition, why the name Sixty? Because its cubic engine is about sixty Cubic Inches. The Americans talk like this. But as we do not understand anything about their measurement systems, we will simplify by specifying that the twin displays 999 cm3. To fall below the 1000 mark, the very modern block of the Scout loses 6 mm of bore. It remains a super-square engine with ribs of 93 x 73.6 mm, more typical for the revolutions / minutes than for the fat of the couple. And technological! We are surprised when we learn that an American custom engine has liquid cooling, double ACT, injection, Ride-by-Wire on its pedigree. The technique is there, the power less. By losing cubage, the watts went from 100 to 78 horsepower. A slap. Who does not complex in the Sixty, because its stud is in the middle high of the category. On the engine, crankcases, shock absorbers. Technically, the Scout Sixty is also light years away from Milwaukee’s offering. Two aluminum frames are anchored on the engine at the bottom and on steel tubes at the top. The bike is very well held by its frame, the rest of the frame does not call for any particular criticism. Classic fork, two side shocks, 16 inch rims with a big tire at the front and a small one at the rear, two brake discs … for the machine but per wheel. We would have appreciated having two pancakes at the front, just to plant the brakes more than is usual. But does the Sixty want it that way? No, cruising and anticipating are marked roughly in its specifications. To kidding, it happens with the Victory cousins, especially with the Octane.
Sold 10% less for 10% less displacement, the Indian Scout Sixty does not however offer 10% less pleasure than the 1133. Its dress and its chassis are identical. Only performance and chrome go down one category. It is displayed as the discovery of the Indian world, as the 883 allow to put a wheel in the Harley universe. With its low center of gravity, its not devoid of rigor and its temperament, the Scout Sixty constitutes a kind of bridge between the traditional custom and the vintage roadster..
