Liquid protectors made from cornstarch
Two students from Hessen have developed motorcycle protectors from cornstarch. The joint protection for motorcyclists, named FleckProtec, has now won the national competition “Youth research” excellent.

Conventional protectors, such as those used in various recreational sports and also in protective motorcycle clothing, consist mainly of rigid plastic or solid foams and can therefore restrict freedom of movement. Not so the protector, which was developed by the two students Anna (16 years) and Adrian Fleck (19 years): It consists of a soft silicone cover filled with a starchy liquid. When exposed to high force, this solidifies to form a solid and should thus reliably protect against injuries.

The siblings not only used and optimized the unusual, so-called non-Newtonian property of the cornstarch liquid, they also developed a measuring device with which they compared the effectiveness of their “FleckProtec” with that of commercially available products.
in the “Youth researches”-In the 2018 competition, the two were awarded various prizes for this by the Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture Julia Klockner, as well as the German Research Foundation and the European Commission. In 2016, the siblings were regional winners in the physics department.
When asked which came first – the interest in motorsport or the fascination with physics, Anna Fleck answers: “We actually did research on non-Newtonian fluids out of pure fascination and then wanted them “Gimmick” use in a product. The intensive involvement with protectors and motorsport really piqued my interest in a motorcycle license. At the moment I don’t have the time and the money (and the age, although there are different classes).”
We wish both of them continued success and of course that they will tackle and pass their motorcycle license soon!
