Enormous. No other term better defines this colossal cruiser from Kawasaki. ENORMOUS ! Never has a twin been so imposing, so full, so intimidating. Behind his tarantula gaze, this VN doesn’t hesitate to push everyone around. He’s got it in his stomach, and he wants to tell you. Consider that there is more than 1 liter of displacement…. in each cylinder. 2053 cm3 of cubic capacity, that commands respect. Even Harley’s scream in eagles don’t compare. The VN 2000 is a monster, the culmination of the Super Macho line.
This twin has nothing in common with that of other NVs. Kawasaki has designed a new mill, unique, majestic, a veritable cathedral of metal, sufficient to instantly forge a reputation for this new cruiser. A generous block with measurements close to exuberance. The crankshaft alone weighs the weight of a German Shepherd. As for the mill itself, don’t even try to lift it with your bare hands; as heavy as a small 125 motorcycle. The huge connecting rods end with pistons weighing over 500 grams each. Big, beefy, but it’s not to digest the power of the V-twin that the mobile crew is so well-sized – with 103 horsepower, this 2-liter admits a modest power per liter, but among the most powerful in the world of custom. No, the goal is to withstand the enormous torque produced: 18 mkg in the face. “Ouch, ouch, I’m roughing it up” exclaim the pistons.
Monstrous? Yes. But also beautiful. The engine may well be of a completely modern design, with its liquid cooling, injection and 4 valves per cylinder, it thinks above all of showing off, with its columns covered with fins, its large rocker rods, its overflowing chrome, and this expansive airbox where proudly sits a provocative 2000. You only have to turn the handle to realize the power of the beast. Whatever gear is engaged, the thrust is impressive. What a safe! The mkgs know how to keep themselves in normal condition but do not hesitate to tear off their arms as soon as the injectors become generous on the pittance. However, does this cruiser know how to behave well? Of course, and he is even surprisingly polite. You don’t expect such flexibility at low revs from such a large displacement. The other face of the VN 2000 is then revealed: a breathtaking cruiser, whose sound rocks with more liveliness than the vibrations of the twin, too limited compared to the colossus that produces them. Do you feel like doubling up or getting your adrenaline pumping? No problem. A shot of gas and the thrill is at the rendezvous. Keeping up the big pace will quickly be an ordeal. Installed on a custom, speed quickly becomes a test.
On a sports car, the wheelbase is around 1400 mm; on a GT road, this value increases to around 1500 mm. On the VN 2000, you reach 1735 mm – a distance worthy of a limousine. A device of disproportion, this VN could not content with big numbers only with the engine; the chassis is in the same vein. 2.50 m long, a 49 mm thick fork, over 370 kg on the scale, basketball shoes (150 at the front, 200 at the rear), exhausts as long as a highway, a long silhouette, majestic, monumental – a noble monster. Which requires a minimum of anticipation and good manners on takeoff. Spinning in a pocket square reveals mission impossible with such a template. There is no question of arriving like crazy in a curve, counting on improvisation – you have to prevent your turn, big juggernaut between the pognes requires. But once launched, the VN 2000 shows remarkable balance. Tight rows are not his fiddle of Ingres, so he makes up for it with conviction on less rare roads with good handling, very good braking (2 discs of 300 mm at the front with 4 piston calipers and a large 320 mm at the rear), and this bouncing torque only handicapped by a slightly too long transmission. The seat is firm, wide, and allows the posterior to be properly wedged during strong acceleration; as if by chance that we keep asking for more.
And then there’s this look that turns passers-by. From the front, its optical unit with a set of lights arranged in a crown, like a \ “Gatling gun, is intimidating at will. Its presence is matched only by its strength, and impossible to be discreet wherever you go, but do not expect to have fun like riding a light and playful roadster style 600 Hornet or Suzuki SV 650. With the VN 2000, you dance the waltz with Mister T.
