Now that Kawasaki is joining the neo-retro train, it isn’t halfway doing it. Far from calming the spirits, the Z 900 RS adds two ladles of kerosene in the locomotive. A first herbal tea with the standard version, a second more espresso with the Cafe edition. And it is now that Kawa tickles the other sensitive chord, that of the competition. Not in the perfs, but in the mind.
Although … With its 111 horsepower, the Z 900 RS has what it takes to keep pace with the most committed. With this Cafe, a trendy racer, the pilot will be able to get caught up in the game. And that starts long before the key releases the switch. In its green color streaked with a white wave, the machine catapults us into the glorious period of the 70s, when the Kawa were making life difficult. Better: with its plump old-style fork crown, the memory changes – Don’t you see the halo of a Z2R floating around the Z 900 RS Cafe ?
The fashion of retro has seen many creations flourish in all directions, with formidable visual expressions, often going hand in hand with noticeable discomfort. Kawa sees things differently for his imitation cafe-racer. The riding position changes compared to the 900 RS, with a low handlebar that brings your torso forward. But without excess – just enough to have a sporty attitude without the inconvenience. The purists will curse, the backs will appreciate.
The Z 900 RS Cafe therefore provokes the first tilt with its appealing color and its old sporty nose. A few details will then come to support the printing. Nothing better than a vintage saddle with integrated backrest to continue the illusion. And for dessert, a brushed finish for the silencer and black for the handlebars.
In this segment tinged with nostalgia, one of the prerogatives is the adoption of spoke rims. The Z 900 RS Cafe skips this, as does the standard version. It will be necessary to console oneself with the same bandage: the shape of the sticks supposed to imitate the rays. Moderately convincing…
More stylish, the Cafe remains technically identical to the Z 900 RS, with a trellis frame, a 4 cylinder distantly extrapolated from the ZX-9R assisted by traction control, an inverted 41 mm fork equipped with radial brake calipers , instrumentation with double needle counters enclosing a digital window, and above all this silhouette in tribute to the 900 Z1.
A bit retro-sporty, the Kawasaki Z 900 RS Cafe can be consumed as is or become the starting point for personalization. The Japanese brand returns with luster in a segment that only the former W 800 defended. Alas, the breath of time is expensive. Under the ceiling of 12,500 euros, we are still cheaper than a BMW NineT Racer or a Thruxton R but it stings anyway.
