Impressive sovereignty

600, 636, 600 – and now 636 again. Kawasaki is adding to the displacement, takes it away again, and puts it on again. As you wish. The ZX-6R endures it bravely and meets this fickleness with impressive aplomb.

Kawasaki ZX-6R 636 in the test

Ten years ago it was important. Very important. At that time, the assembled motorcycle world racked its brains over what Kawasaki was up to it. 636 instead of 600 cubic centimeters – that was a radical cut in one of the most popular vehicle classes. And especially in racing circles. The new ZX-6R broke out – and made history. Until Kawasaki returned to the original displacement limit in 2007.

Informative mix: In the ZX-6R cockpit, analog and digital play together harmoniously.

This impression manifests itself on the test bench. The performance zenith is exactly at 13,000 rpm with 126 hp, while the predecessor only achieved its 122 hp at 14,000 rpm. The comparison with the last 636 unit from 2006 is also interesting (see performance diagram). Here, too, the new engine is above the old one in all speed ranges, especially when it comes to torque.

With regard to the chassis (the frame was taken over from its predecessor), the new ZX-6R has the advantage of the assistance systems in particular. ABS and traction control promise first and foremost increased safety in public life and only in the second instance an even better racetrack performance. And in fact, both the first two levels of the traction control, which can be switched off, as well as the ABS (which can also be switched off) are designed to be more defensive, regulating early and clearly noticeable on wavy or wet surfaces. The superbly adhesive Bridgestone S20 initial tires in special specification “J” ensure that they usually hardly have anything to do under ideal conditions, which quickly establish intimate contact with the road even under the cool and wet and cold test conditions and also with little set-up torque and good self-damping shines. This benefits the ride comfort as well as the 25 millimeter longer spring with 7.5 percent lower spring rate of the shock absorber, while the also redesigned Big Piston fork from Showa reliably cushions and dampens even rough distortions, but at least in terms of response behavior in inhospitable Outside temperatures with a high breakaway torque and therefore a little bit stubborn.

Quite the opposite of the convincing Nissin brake system. Progressively designed, finely dosed and powerful in its effect – the new ZX-6R leaves little to be desired in this respect as well. And so it should above all be a wish that future ZX-6R prospects have. Namely, that it should stand out more clearly in terms of price from the Superbike bolides (which are available here and there as last year’s models for the same money). Only then could the green set theory work.

Used Kawasaki Ninja 636s are rare.

With the 2019 Ninja 636, Kawasaki has brought a new wind to the 600 super sports class, but used copies can still be found on the motorcycle market. Due to the good price-performance ratio of the Ninja 636, many owners keep their bikes, which is why the selection is relatively small. Here is the overview: used Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R 636 in Germany.
