After three chapters of Z 1000 SX, the big streamlined roadster from Kawa offers itself a technical and identity update. Question of standardization or desire to assert a sporting affiliation, this Z becomes Ninja, which corresponds to its American name. There, the Z 1000 SX has been called Ninja 1000 since 2011.
Merger of the names to result in a Ninja 1000 SX, a modernized version enriched with an exciting roadster-Sport-GT of homogeneity and efficiency. Hence the manifest caution of its evolution in 2020. More than a not at all mandatory redesign, Kawasaki preferred to fine-tune a number of elements, from a little to a lot..
No risk was taken for the dressing. Subtle, even shy, the renewal of this fairing with taut forms is content to finely sharpen it. Equipped with LEDs since the last generation, the headlights become even sharper, just like the eyes. A toilet for the sides, a touch up for the hoof, all for a touch of acidity in her silhouette without any change of scenery. The Ninja delicately pursues the Z 1000 SX.
The rear arouses more curiosity. After years and years of double silencers with double exits, Kawa returns to more simplicity with a single exhaust. The appendage is well provided in length, clearly exceeding the system of adjusting the chain by eccentric (a rarity). The interest is elsewhere, and twofold. It represents a gain of 2 kilos, and brings the final touch to the work of the engine manufacturers to make the 4 cylinders cleaner. Euro5 arrives, the Kawa is preparing for it with a revision of the camshaft profiles, shorter intake ducts of 45 mm for cylinders 1 and 4, a revised mapping and a 3-way catalyst in the manifold.
No technical consequences for the 1043 cm3, always happy to announce its 142 horsepower and 11.3 mkg. Impatient to warm up the new pneumatic equipment, the Bridge ‘S22, he knows that certain electronic crutches will change his job. He had a few; girlfriends are invited to the party.
By doubling in SX (2011), the Z 1000 became almost a road roadster, even something approaching the field of sport-tourism. Its sportiness asserts itself a little more with the assembly in series of an Up & Down shifter. The road is not left with the installation of a cruise control, made possible thanks to ride-by-wire. More comfortable saddles and a bubble that can now be adjusted to 4 positions are in the same vein. It can be adjusted without tools, let us remember. We will appreciate on a daily basis what the Z 1000 SX already had, such as the assisted and anti-dribble clutch, the discreet inserts for fixing the suitcases and the offset wheel for adjusting the shock absorber. A central stand? Still not on the program. A USB port? Optional. On the other hand, and this allows us to come back to the electronics plan, there is something new on the dashboard side..
TFT technology is rapidly gaining ground in the Kawasaki range. If KTM was able to install it from its 125 Duke up to the 1290 Adventure, it is only a matter of time before the needles and the liquid crystals disappear, except for the vintage and neo-retro models. For now, let’s take a look at this 10.9cm / 4.3 inch screen. A kind of standard since it is found on the Z 650 & 900, Ninja 650 and Z H2. If the size is the same for the recipients, the content and options are richer depending on the cubic capacity. With a choice of black or white background, the screen here has two types of displays. Route style with a beautiful layout and all the necessary information; or Sport with the presence of indicators for the angle of inclination, the forces exerted during acceleration or braking and the G taken.
With a Bluetooth chip, the cockpit can chat with the phone via the “Rideology” app. What to control the basic functions (call, messages, music), consult its routes via GPS, configure the settings or obtain information on the vehicle.
The on-board electronics also act on driving. The Z 1000 SX had two Power Modes, 3-stage KTRC traction control, KIBS intelligent braking, IMU inertial unit and KCMF cornering management system. The Ninja adds four Riding Modes, governing the KTRC and Power Mode. It’s not complicated, just a game of combinations:
– Sport mode: Traction control in mode 1 (the least intrusive) and power in full
– Road mode: KTRC on 2 and full power
– Rain mode: KTRC on 3 and Low power
– Rider mode: the user sets the KTRC at his choice (1/2/3 / Off) as well as the Power Mode (F or L).
It is all well and good these cables and these analyzes in real time. But it’s not going to be of much use if the chassis doesn’t hold up. Precisely, as that of the Z 1000 SX was perfectly suitable, the Ninja 1000 SX uses the same technical solution. The aluminum spar frame retains Kawasaki’s confidence, as do the 4-piston radial brake calipers and their pasture, 300mm rotors. The inverted 41mm fork receives a small modification to the internal piston to soften the reactions during the compression phases. For her as for the rear monoshock, the settings have been recalibrated. From the old to the new SX, the tires will make most of the differences – the S22s have quite a bit of potential..
The SX evolves, on points of modernism without touching the essential. A slightly cleaner engine, the dose of “necessary” electronics, a small facelift, a pinch of comfort and more – this summary of a line is not enough to relate the majority expression that maintains this Kawasaki. A gradual mutation in Sport-GT which sticks really well to the skin, offering a versatility that the Z 1000 can not boast of.
