It’s still no luck. While the Vintage movement confirmed its rise, the Euro4 standards came to sabotage the survival of the W 800. It which perfectly illustrated the ‘classic’ at Kawasaki, the one that referred to the W1 of the 60s, like a retro that never was nothing neo, as frail as a bee in the midst of bumblebees.
Push me through the door and I come back through the balcony. The time of a break in the Akashi workshops allowed this machine to prepare for its return. The W 800 is like before, but it changed almost everything.
Its resemblance to the Triumph Bonneville is not new. Since the W 650, it’s like that. And it continues. We even wonder what has changed since its last episode in 2016. Let’s take a look ….. So, there is less, much less chrome. Black everywhere, smaller indicators, an LED headlight chourave to the Z 900 RS. Ah, worse as she had to submit to the legislation, won’t she hang on ugly reflectors and ABS tracks.
It cannot be all; Kawa announces that only 10% of the old W has been renewed. A package of parts has therefore been reworked, without this necessarily being visible..
The presence of ABS puts the chip in the ear. With the drum before, we would have had a lot of difficulty installing it. Suddenly, the W 800 Street, like the Cafe, receives a brake disc at the rear – with a two-piston caliper. The front disc grows from 300 to 320 mm while the wheel that accommodates it goes from 19 to 18 inches. Unmissable, spoked rims, sausage pots and fork gaiters are always in the game.
The double-cradle steel frame is identical in shape, except that each element has been re-evaluated, the thickness of the tubes modified and the rigidity revised on all the parts constituting it. The fork takes on diameter with 41 mm per tube. The tank pushes the walls to gain 1 liter. As for the scale, it registers an increase in weight of 5 kilos.
The W 800 intends to show a little more rigor in its escapades. In addition to the increased rigidity of the frame, the suspensions have been firmed up. Let’s not get carried away either, the bike dreams of wavy departmental roads; absolutely no harshness.
What about the engine? To revive the W 800, it had to be made compatible with Euro4. O2 sensors and new catalysts take care of that. From the outside, the 773cc twin is unchanged. Same casings, same fins, same antique charm, and above all this distribution by conical couple. This motorcycle is the only one on the market to still offer this gear kinematics to stir the valves..
The big advantage of this engine is its frankness: it smells of the past, it lives as it did in the past, and it conceives power as it did in the past. It claims a maximum of 35 kW, the same energy as the old version. Its 48 horses correspond to its silhouette and its vocation. Small bonus, they are reached some 500 rpm earlier than before. The couple even gained a little fat: 0.3 mkg, for a peak of 6.4 mkg. We are delighted … moderately. The maximum is obtained at 4800 revs – while the ex-W 800 offered it at 2500 revs.
This block is not a thunderbolt, rather a pleasant windmill for a walk, with more class than vigor. However, Kawa grafted him an anti-dribble clutch. It brings more safety to downshifting (if you pass 8 gears at once …) and above all a pleasant strong lever smoothness.
As a bonus for young drivers, the watts are right on top for the A2 license.
Advocating a relaxed driving position, the W 800 is an invitation to pleasure. On the handlebars, we will find the counter unit with two dials, two hands, a digital window and a series of significantly enriched indicator lights. The internal decoration is reviewed, while the red zone has lost 500 rpm. Anyway, the liveliness to take turns, that was never really his thing.
Flute, the central stand is no longer standard. The knee grip on the tank either. Well, if that can help keep the price reasonable.
Oops no, the price is not at all contained. The update hurts the wallet, with the W 800 displayed with 17% more. It is hardly less expensive than a 900 Bonneville T100, more powerful and better equipped. Faced with a Street Twin, you don’t even have to try the game. The Kawasaki W 800 Street must first and foremost have a crush.
Favorite not limited to its plastic but also to its pastoral behavior. Its behavior promises to be a little notch above that which we had tested on the roads of nostalgia..
