A beast ! A beast thirsty for performance. When Kawasaki created the 3rd generation ZX-10R, the small world of motorcycle sport clearly saw that the tension was mounting a notch among the Greens. With advanced electronics, a monstrous 200 horsepower motor supervised by traction control, a chassis ready for the Superbike, the Ninja takes the lead in Japanese hypersports.
While the WSBK version scrambles in the middle of the stage (a clear step up from 2010), sister EWC has seriously prepared for endurance. The 2011 version ZX-10R has barely left the factory when it is thrown straight into one of the discipline’s most prestigious and toughest races: the Bol d´or. Was she ready for this? Not a little: with the GSR team, she finished both laps of the clock in 2nd position, 6 laps behind the winner.
So, let’s take a close look at why. Because this performance, the Kawa does not owe it only to its parents. Gilles Stafler’s team took care of her to make her an efficiency monster.
The first step is to transfer all that is useless and change some mandatory parts, then optimize others. We modify the headlights, the tank, the saddle, the swinging arm…. and we throw around twenty kilos in the trash. The engine goes through Team SRC and Bernard Lecour preparation and then spits out big horsepower here, with even more enthusiasm than in series. The GSR announces more than 200. In fact, it must have a good twenty more out of the box..
When Olivier Four, Julien Da Costa, Gregory Leblanc and Guillaume Dietrich release this big cavalry, they will also twist (so to speak) the chassis to exploit the chassis even sharper than the original. The suspensions? Everything goes to Ohlins. Up front, Robby’s cut-out triple trees feature a 43mm FGR 700 pressurized fork – gear used in the Superbike World Championship and until recently in MotoGP. When it comes to the possibility of adjustments and braking, there is nothing better, except for the so-called “factory” forks. Same signature for the rear element, Swedish gilded with the reference TTX.
Exhaust pipe ? Ugly and asthmatic. A small Leovince element is certainly more sonorous (the melody wins, not the eardrums) but above all lighter and improves the breath.
The rims ? 16.5 inches from Marchesini, so light it could almost fly in southerly winds. When it comes to braking, that’s a must-have for what Nissin can do; all radial of course. Staubli fittings allow brake calipers to be changed in 10 seconds.
Does she want to go fast? Everything is here. Does she want to do endurance training? So we’re going to make the same changes to her as the girlfriends. A 24-liter tank with zenith valves for substantial relays and quick refueling. A scale of comparison? With a stock tank, you can last a little over half an hour and then it will take at least 2 minutes to refuel. In this EWC configuration, the ZX-10R runs for almost an hour and refueling slams in 15 seconds all inclusive..
To achieve this crazy time, a quick-change wheel system is installed at the front and rear. Almost every motorcycle entered in Endurance has one; but the systems are all more or less artisanal. Each team develops a little trick or a special piece that improves a phase of the supply. We tinker sometimes for weeks to gain a second. But a second gained multiplied by each relay, that gives a bonus of 23 or 24 seconds after 24 hours. Not much a priori…. don’t tell S.E.R.T members: the gap between them and the victory over GMT 94 at the 2005 24 Hours of Le Mans was 20.459 seconds. You now understand the value of every moment of grappling on the stopwatch.
For the race, the ZX-10R GSR leaves it to its team to pamper it and refuel it in a slice of a minute. His desire is different: to charge, turn, angler, spit fire, and win. Response after the checkered flag.
