Well, the new ZX-6R 636, it tries to recover a little of that spirit, of this notion of user-friendliness. If this can be guessed by its softer, more fluid but still muscular lines, a grip confirms this friendliness. A high but accessible saddle and more cozy than usual, a sporty but less exclusive riding position, firm and rigorous suspensions which do the maximum to spare you – The Ninja is even more thirsty for chrono but she now takes care of pleasing her pilot both on and off the circuit. This block, the only one in the category to exceed 600 cc (there is the RR for competition), remains faithful to Kawa traditions. Supple and pleasant, it responds from low revs, in part thanks to the valve housed in the exhaust. Of course, it is not the monstrous trunk of a ZX-10R but it is very appreciable when one walks without looking for the arsenal or if one negotiates a tight turn with the tachometer drowned in the low. The dashboard has still not changed. It’s high-tech, stylish, complete … whatever you want but to read the engine speed, hang in there. And even more when you push the boiler beyond the 10,000 rpm mark. The ZX-6R takes a deep breath up to 12,000 trs and then unleashes hostilities. The 4-cylinder then meows furiously while it is severe. No more laughing, the mill becomes mean and balances its 130 hp for the best without the worst. It is then up to the pilot to demonstrate his know-how and he will only have to worry about that. The softness of the controls and the box have already given him a smile; the ease of handling and the efficiency of the front axle were responsible for giving it confidence; The anti-dribble in the clutch, the remarkable braking and the overall stability allow it to let go between the vibrators. Perhaps the brakes would benefit from being a little more progressive, but for the moment, the mill is setting off to attack the 16,000 rpm. A very good extension and performance to the key.
Not far from flawless for the new ZX-6R. For road use, we can blame it for its too low screen or the lack of storage under the saddle. For everything else, this development boils down to one word: improvement. Efficient, remarkably well balanced, more welcoming, more elegant, the 600 Ninja could well become the scarecrow of the category..
