Maxi-trails have become in recent years a cocktail between the qualities of a road, the balance of an all-terrain, the electronics of a car and the performance of a sports car. The 1190 Adventure, with its big twin of 150 nags, is one of the most impactful machines in the segment.. Still, that wasn’t enough for Mattighofen. As if an engineer Katoche had released a crazy idea around the coffee maker: “Guys, if we put in the Adventure the engine of the craziest roadster on the market? Besides, it’s ours. watts everywhere, we could put more gear on it. That would make a Super Adventure !!! “
He said it all. The motorcycling world has barely accepted the fact that a trail now makes 150 nags, that here is an even more miserable version. Those who wanted a concentrated Red Bull sauce SUV machine will be served. In the KTM 1290 Super Adventure, it is the engine of the Superduke R, that is to say 1301 cm3 of bestiality. Watts? Everywhere, all the time, pulling out every molar. Fortunately, microchips are legion. The trail Katoche becomes the most powerful in its class, with 160 horsepower achieved at the maximum speed of 8750 rpm – that’s 10 hp more than the 1190, reached 750 very earlier. The couple ? Hardly enough to uproot a century-old oak tree. The twin comes out up to 14.2 mkg at 6750 rpm. The “little” brother tops out at 12.7; and this value was already plentiful. Don’t be afraid to pack good company, luggage, fridge and caravan on this 1290 Super Adventure. At 2500 revs, i.e. the notch just above idle, the muscle has already reached 11 mkg.
Let the adventurers be reassured; let the buccaneers calm down. Although the boiler comes from the SuperDuke 1290 R, we did not graft it as it is in the trail. Some adjustments are made to make its character more in line with the philosophy of Adventure. What does not change: cylinders, pistons and connecting rods / What changes: cylinder head and crankshaft. A heavier flywheel will give a little more flexibility to the Austrian mechanics.
Dac, he’s got the heart of a bull. But KTM didn’t just want to make the most vigorous maxi-trail. The concept is to offer the best of the best: the most powerful, the most equipped, the safest, the best in the category. History of ousting the Queen 1200 GS from her pedestal.
The strongest: with its 160 cannons, it sends 10 units more than its 1190 version and the Ducati Multistrada, 23 more than a Triumper Tiger Explorer, and another 35 above the BMW GS and Aprilia Caponord.
The most road: not easy to unbolt the Behème reference, whose consistency and level of satisfaction are impressive. But the Super Adventure will fuel the debates. Compared to the 1190, inflation wins everything. It will go further with its 30 liter (+7 l) tank, better protect with its larger fairing and improved windshield, which can be adjusted with one hand, prevent cold with the saddle and handles heated, and the list of standard equipment will calm many competitors. Adaptive LED lighting embedded in the fenders *, off-road crash bars, offroad spoked rims, cruise control, luggage racks and supports for suitcases, tire pressure monitoring, multi-point adjustable ergonomics (handlebars, height adjustable saddle and footrest) … and it keeps it under the elbow for the electronic-mechanical added value.
A processor here, a sensor there, a control software, multiplied it all from one end of the wheels to the other and you have a motorcycle equipped like a Mercedes. KTM has put together everything it could for this Super Adventure. WP suspensions are the most successful in its catalog, the semi-active model that adapts constantly. 4 damping modes (Soft / Street / Sport / Offroad) are selectable by the pilot. Depending on this choice, the sensors and the accelerometer, the central unit adopts the appropriate settings on the fork and the shock absorber..
So much for the controlled damping, which only a handful of trail running offers currently. KTM also offers something to make its Super Adventure the safest. What should be ? What does it offer? ABS already, which has become essential; 4-mode traction control + off – choice between Sport, Street, Rain, Offroad and off for the bravest **; the MSC, which acts on the strength of the ABS as a function of the angle taken; and in the range of options, Katoche offers a hill start assistance system, Hill Hold Control, and MSR (Motor Slip Regulation), a kind of anti-dribble by management of engine assistance. Basically, to prevent the rear wheel from locking up if the pilot falls 12 gears at once, the MSR re-balances a little sauce in the engine and limits the risk of skidding; it bumps with the MSC to account for the tilt. In short, a self-adjusting engine brake, to complete the mechanical anti-dribble installed as standard in the clutch of the twin.
With all that, you would almost forget that the motorcycle is not just an engine, a trendy look, a premium positioning and a ride from Monaco to Marathon. Under the dress, the Super Adventure is held by a chrome-molybdenum trellis frame. Braking is monitored by many pieces of silicon, but the job is still the right paw and foot that do it, controlling the action of Brembo calipers. Radials with 4 pistons in front, classic with 2 pistons behind. Large 320 mm discs at the front and 1 of 267 at the rear should be faithful to the best performance in the segment.
By becoming Super, the Adventure also gained weight. About fifteen kilos, or 229 without gasoline on the scale.
With its 1290 Super Adventure, KTM announces that it is offering “the perfect bike for all outings”. Without espousing the official discourse, we say to ourselves that this bike really gives itself the means. A true Range Rover two-wheeler version. Active and passive safety as well as the desire to go very far are omnipresent. M … e; suitcases are not in series. Certain equipment had to be left in the accessory department. The only thing that will bring us dreams of expedition and / or Sunday performance is the bill for such an adventurer..
Recall campaign (updated February 8, 2019):
The Austrian firm KTM launched in February 2019 a recall campaign for its 1290 Super Adventure 2015 and 2016. In question, a possible fuel leak at the level of the tank. The manufacturer explained in fact that: “During the manufacturing process of the fuel tank, non-conformities appeared during the molding process, and in some cases, slight traces of fuel at the level of the saddle and the screwed connection. lower under the fuel tank fairing were found “. For the machines concerned, two possibilities: If a leak is observed, “the fuel tank is replaced”, assures the Austrian manufacturer. If no leaks are detected, a “conversion” kit will be installed to prevent the problem from appearing later. The replacement of the fuel tank (of course free) “takes about an hour and can only be carried out by an authorized KTM dealer”, explains KTM, who clarified that the customers concerned are informed by mail in order to invite them to contact a dealer. KTM approved. You can also check if your machine is affected on the KTM website.
* On the left and right of the fuel tank, adaptive lighting includes three LED segments linked to a tilt angle sensor from the MSC system. Depending on the bank angle, the KTM Adaptive Lighting can use from one to three segments, which gives the rider more visibility in his turning path..
** – Sport: Reserved for hotheads: Allows a significant level of skidding: guaranteed drifting sensations !
– Street: Smooth control for a comfortable, unruffled ride with full engine power.
– Rain: early intervention and minimum skidding in wet conditions, with engine power reduced to a maximum of 100 hp.
– Offroad: Skidding up to 100% or a wheel speed that can double for ambitious all-terrain pilots. Dare to skid controlled off-road, with engine power reduced to a maximum of 100 hp.
– Off: Those who think they are better than the MTC can enjoy maximum propulsion at all times, exactly as they choose, without any electronic assistance.
