We’re not talking about reason, sense or understanding here. This is about something completely insane: With the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R through the desert of Peru.

If the throttle were a switch, then this motorcycle would be uncontrollable. 160 hp at its peak, that’s far too much power at full throttle. At least off the highway, not to mention off-road use. But after all, there is this practical metering device called the throttle grip on the right side of the handlebars. And you have to admit that to the 1290 KTM: No big twin can be dosed so elegantly, is so delicately controllable. At KTM, they have devised small resonator chambers on the inlet ducts as a current calming measure, which brings even more smooth running. There is also in the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R now, as in the S version, the TFT display from Bosch with simplified menu navigation and individually programmable display, easily recognizable even under the bright equatorial sun. Behind the well-known driving programs – off-road is of course standard on the R – there are new assistance systems, controlled by the inertia sensors of the IMU.

Like sand at the ocean

1290 Super Adventure R has taken off once, the upcoming landing could be uncomfortably hard. And this despite the fact that harder springs and more damping have been installed at the front and a progressive PDS shock absorber has recently been installed at the rear. But as nice as you can surf between the dunes: The Brocken needs speed. If he gets stuck in the sand, it’s time to work. The 240 kilograms alone can hardly be extracted from the powder sand.

In such situations a brute 160 hp is counterproductive, but otherwise extremely entertaining. And so it still applies: There is no substitute for performance – except more performance.
