Ah ….. If I had a little more ….. Here is the kind of thinking you ask yourself in many conditions. And the mini Duke told herself pretty much the same thing. In 125, the little Katoche already knows the covetousness, but its 15 horses can be fair under certain conditions. A little more cubic capacity but an identical chassis and trim, here is the 200 cm3 version. A total mimicry that only the small sticker indicating the cylinder capacity will allow you to distinguish. The problem for the mainstream market: the need to have a motorcycle license to drive it. The advantage: 10 more horsepower, which allows the single-cylinder to proudly display 26 donkeys. A value identical to some 2 and a half Japanese, such as the Honda CBR 250 R or the Suzuki 250 Inazuma.
Stroke and bore are increased to go from 124.7 to 199.5 cm3. The majority of internal moving parts are revised accordingly: camshafts, connecting rod, piston, valve; and let’s not forget the essential modifications made to the cylinder, the airbox, the injection and the exhaust. Around the engine and under the plastics, the essential remains: trellis frame, WP suspensions, Brembo brakes, etc….
By inflating the engine without touching the rest of the machine, KTM is playing a winner in many ways: more power, limited development costs, a contained price increase (400 euros), and the image of the 125 Duke which has shoved his little world. Although the 200 is 10 kilos heavier than the 125, there is plenty of gear to have fun. And its very vindictive design garners a lot of votes.
Its only real concern, as for its competitors, is the disaffection of the French public for this range of displacement. In France, if you are between 126 and 599 cm3, no salvation. The current context is however more and more conducive to affordable, fun, not too greedy and light machines. But go and explain the reason to a biker who by definition only runs on passion.
