In the past, the trail was the device with which almost everyone started the bike. An XT, a DR, a cheap and not powerful thing which did not fear the bowls and the exits anywhere. The species has become rare, almost to the point of becoming confidential, in favor of entry-level roadsters. Except that … The A2 license is implanted in the motorcycle landscape. The offer for young permits is increasing. There are small machines all over the place to energize the bands at less than 35 KW. It’s time for a 390 Adventure to venture into the area.
Suddenly, KTM offers everything you need around its 390 platform: a Duke roadster, an RC sports car, and this Adventure trail. What to initiate the intrepid young people and to make them the soft eyes to go upmarket. In Mattighofen, we start the paths here then we can progress in 790 until confirmed in 1290.
Okay, we’re not there yet. Let’s first look at what promises, claims, announces this bike.
Katoche sets out on a terrain that he has mastered widely, the off-road (more and less off); in a displacement where its Adventure have never put the wheels. An area already cleared by the BMW G 310 GS, Kawasaki Versys 300 and Suzuki 250 V-Strom. No fear for the Austrian, whose engine is the largest (373 cm3) and the most powerful (43 horses at 9000 rpm). Equipped with a 38 mm injection, a double ACT, 4 valves and a balancing arm, it also benefits from an anti-dribble clutch and cooling optimized especially for the Adventure..
Not too powerful so no ulterior motive when opening the throttle. However, KTM plays it safe by adding traction control, deactivable for the daring.
It’s not a big trail, and yet it does have an amazing dose of electronics. What we have already mentioned, plus an ABS with Offroad mode to no longer operate on the rear, a 5-inch color TFT screen controllable on the handlebars, as well as a shifter and an optional smartphone pairing. Not bad for a machine of this ilk. It seems that he wants to go on the direct offensive.
This attack, it will start on the road for without apprehension to distinguish itself in the clay. With its face of 790 Adventure, the 390 smells like scampering at full speed. The front wheel retains some reservations, opting for a versatile 19-inch instead of a more committed 21-inch TT dimension. The suspensions are more voluntary and benefit from a travel of 170 mm at the front and 170 mm at the rear. Its ground clearance is 200 mm. It is not yet an EXC but it already offers certain possibilities of crossing and especially what not to be afraid of the majority of forgotten roads and paths between places. Especially since Continental TKC 70 tires claim a versatile profile. Its cobblestones in the rubber will not be reluctant to land in the hard as in the furniture. Small disadvantage of its raised part-cycle, a consequent height of saddle. 855 mm is no small feat. Luckily and against cash, KTM has provided an optional low saddle.
The bubble is not very big on the 390 Adventure. But it is adjustable (with tool) on two heights, and allows to clear the view perfectly when the driving conditions are … playful and messy. Adjustments are also found on the WP Apex 43mm inverted fork. Compression in the left tube and rebound on the right side. As often with KTM models, we appreciate the small knobs to make adjustments without removing screwdrivers and others. The mono shock absorber of the same invoice also has two settings: rebound and preload. Between the two stands a tubular steel trellis frame very similar to that of the 390 Duke, where an extended swingarm is anchored. The rear buckle bolted to the frame, meanwhile, is derived from that of the 450 Rally. The Adventure goes back to its origins as a Duke for its braking, with a 320 mm disc complete with a Bybre 4-piston caliper. The 230mm rear disc will be satisfied with a single piston.
My ex-father-in-law says adventure is at the end of the street. It may be necessary to go a little further to take advantage of the possibilities of the 390 Adventure. Much further too? It’s not a problem. The 14.5 liters of the tank allow you to see coming. 400 terminals according to Katoche. Suppose we hit the turns a bit, we have a bit of fun off-roading, and we should have a minimum of 300 km. In addition to its reduced consumption, the reduced size of this trail makes it possible to dare excursions in trapping grounds at the expense of the risks. If it is necessary to raise its 172 kilos placed in the hot water bottle, it will be an effort relieved by a little technique, but nothing to do with the hassle of lifting a maxi-trail of 250 kilos.
No one will complain to see again accessible trails, with engine capacity and power well calibrated for young discoverers. Question price, it stings a little. Even though the KTM 390 Adventure is produced in India at Bajaj, like other moderately powered models from the Austrian brand, it is by no means a floor price. This bike, under its promises, still allows to open the club of adventurers KTM.
